Taieri River Track
About the Business
Welcome to the Taieri River Track, located in the beautiful Otago region of New Zealand. This 8 km track takes you through the stunning Taieri River Gorge, offering breathtaking views and a unique outdoor experience.
Starting from the river mouth, the Taieri River Track is a 4 km undulating walk that leads you to the John Bull Gully picnic area. Along the way, you will encounter a variety of vegetation and terrain, providing a diverse and captivating walking experience.
As you begin your journey, you will pass through areas with both freshwater and saline plant life, showcasing the unique tidal nature of the river. As the track gradually climbs, you will enter a lush podocarp forest, where you can admire magnificent specimens of Halls totara, tree ferns, and miro trees. Keep an eye out for regenerating kahikatea trees, which are a rare sight due to their specific soil requirements.
After exploring the forest, the track will lead you through open shrubland before descending to the John Bull Gully picnic area. Here, you have the option of returning the same way, offering stunning views of Taieri Mouth and Moturata/Taieri Island, or continuing on the Clutha District Council's Millennium track for an additional 4 km. This section of the track connects with Taieri Ferry Road, which eventually leads to SH1.
To reach the Taieri River Track, take the coastal road south of Dunedin, passing through Green Island and Brighton until you reach Taieri Mouth. Cross the bridge and turn right to reach the start of the track.
Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a photography lover, or simply seeking a peaceful escape in the outdoors, the Taieri River Track is a must-visit destination. Immerse yourself in the beauty of the Otago region and discover the natural wonders that await you along the Taieri River Gorge.

Reviews
"This is an easy-moderate walk, with great view of the Taieri River and the magnificent mountains. Kids can join this walk with their parents."
"We had a great walk. Great views. Most of the track goes through the forest where there is plenty of shade. Perfect for a nice walk in summer"
"Hiking, kayaking, jetskllng, fishing. Nice river and natural picnic areas along the rivers edge."
"This is a good walking track and also a perfect place for family walk with kids and dogs. You get to see amazing lake/river. It took us almost 3 hours to finish the walk (with return). Generally, it's a hard track as it's mostly flat but there parts that are steep. I will definitely recommend this."
"Not a lot of signage. Track was very overgrown when I went and needed some maintenance. Not too difficult but definitely take water with you and food if you are planning on walking the whole distance. Not pram friendly but I was able to walk it with my 6 month old on my back. Otherwise a nice track"
