Our institution has a rich history that dates back to 1885 when Henry Bennett, an Irish immigrant, founded a plant nursery in Dunedin. Henry's passion for horticulture led him to purchase several acres in North East Valley, where he cultivated potatoes, vegetables, and a variety of exotic plants.

Throughout the years, Bennett's nursery gained a reputation for its high-quality products and exceptional customer service. As a result, we became a trusted supplier not only to local customers but also to nurseries across New Zealand. Our commitment to excellence and the conservation of native plants earned the Bennett family two prestigious Loder Cup awards in the 1940s.

The Loder Cup is one of New Zealand's oldest conservation accolades, recognizing individuals and groups who have made outstanding contributions to preserving the country's native flora. This recognition showcases our dedication to sustainable practices and the protection of New Zealand's unique biodiversity.

Today, four generations later, Henry's great great grandson, Brian, carries on the family legacy by focusing on growing mainly New Zealand natives.
