About the Business

Welcome to Tunnel Beach Walk, a must-visit tourist attraction located in Dunedin, New Zealand. Situated at 25 Tunnel Beach Road, this establishment offers a unique experience for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike.
As you embark on this captivating walk, you will be mesmerized by the breathtaking coastal views that await you. Admire the stunning natural archway and land bridge that coexist with the rugged headland covered in coastal turf. This picturesque landscape is truly a sight to behold.
To access the hidden gem of Tunnel Beach, follow the fenced track downhill from Tunnel Beach Road. Along the way, you will encounter a historic tunnel dating back to the 1870s. Descend the steps within this tunnel and be transported to a small, secluded beach nestled amidst towering cliffs. The tranquility and beauty of this hidden oasis are sure to leave you in awe.
Please note that some sections of the track are steep, requiring caution during the descent to the beach. As you make your way back to the car park, be prepared for a challenging climb. If you have low fitness or are accompanied by children, take your time, rest when needed, and relish in the stunning views that surround you. We strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
It is crucial to respect the delicate coastal vegetation that thrives on the headland. Please remain behind the barriers and refrain from walking on or damaging the vegetation. Capture the beauty of this unique ecosystem through photographs and help preserve its fragile existence.
Tunnel Beach is conveniently located south of Dunedin. From Blackhead Road, simply follow the signposted turnoff to Tunnel Beach Road. Begin your adventure at the car park on Tunnel Beach Road, where the wonders of Tunnel Beach Walk await you.
As you explore the headland, you may notice aluminum tags and metallic protection marking experimental plots. This is a collaborative effort between the Department of Conservation (DOC) and the University of Otago to study and restore the damage caused by human trampling. We strive to understand the needs of the turf plants and facilitate their recovery.
Join us at Tunnel Beach Walk for an unforgettable experience. Immerse yourself in the natural beauty, marvel at the coastal vistas, and contribute to the conservation efforts of this fragile ecosystem.
Reviews
"Jul 2023- carpark under construction, the temporary carpark has limited spots. This place is nice but the spot goes uphill and downhill. The way back up to the carpark is 15-20min continuous 30deg uphill. Not recommended for people with mobility issues and wheelchairs. Because of the proximity to the town centre, this place can get crowded and some inconsiderate people throwing away tissues everywhere."
"Stunning views. Not an easy hike. Honestly, the way down is more treacherous on a muddy day but the way up gives you an insane calf workout. For two chubby people on a cool day, it took us about an hour and a half. We didn’t scramble over the rocks on the beach but could have easily spent more time. You’ll be cursing the whole way up if you’re in bad shape, but the views are worth it. They’re in the process of adding in restrooms and more parking but as of early July 23, no bathrooms and limited parking."
"A beautiful walk on a cold winter day. The walk is not long but it is steep. Allow plenty of time to rest and enjoy the view as you walk back up. Please note: This is NOT a swimming beach. There is a strong undertow, rough stone beach, and heavy surf in good weather. The track is narrow in places and the cliff edge is just beyond the fence so this is not the place to bring your dog. It is a beautiful scenic walk with good photo opportunities. There is currently limited parking at the top of the hill. Toilet facilities are currently being constructed (May 2023) at the top of the hill. Requirements: Good walking shoes A wind-breaker style jacket A bottle of water Your camera (or phone with a decent camera built in)"
"A beautiful hidden gem! Gravel trail which leads to a beautiful and surreal view of the beach! Best to wear takkies, carry a jacket and a bottle of water as the trail is long, gets windy and is quite a workout.. but absolutely worth every step!"
