Pakowhai Regional Park (Dog Park)
About the Business
Welcome to Pakowhai Regional Park, a charming country-style park located in Pakowhai, New Zealand. This park is a hidden gem, offering a peaceful rural retreat just a short drive away from the bustling urban areas of Hastings and Napier.
Despite being the smallest of our regional parks, Pakowhai is undoubtedly the most popular, especially among families and their four-legged friends. Affectionately known as 'The Dog Park', this space provides a fantastic environment for dogs to explore, socialize, and play freely. In the center of the park, you'll find an agility course designed specifically for our furry companions.
As you wander through the park, you'll come across the tranquil Raupare Stream, which meanders through the grounds and is connected by charming small bridges. Along the approximately two kilometers of easy paths, you'll encounter some pathways that may be challenging for prams and wheelchairs due to steep or rough terrain.
Pakowhai Regional Park is not only a haven for dogs but also a favorite spot for walking, picnicking, and family outings. The park boasts a variety of specimen trees, a pine plantation, and spacious grass areas for you to enjoy. Make sure to keep an eye out for the beautifully carved seats in the pine plantation, crafted by talented contractors who repurposed storm-blown trees.
To enhance your visit, we invite you to download our comprehensive park guide, which provides directions and valuable information about all of our parks, including Pakowhai.
Established in 1973, Pakowhai Regional Park showcases a delightful mix of mature and newly planted trees, open grass spaces, wetlands, and stop banks. The Raupare Stream, which flows through the park, was strategically modified as part of the Heretaunga Plains Flood Control Scheme to improve drainage and prevent damage from extreme weather events. Today, the stream is spring-fed and serves as a thriving breeding ground for fish and trout.
For those interested in delving deeper into the park's history, we offer the book "Pākōwhai Country Park: A Brief History" for purchase at the Regional Council.
To reach Pakowhai Regional Park, simply hop in your car and head to Pakowhai Road. The park is conveniently located 5km north of Hastings and 12km from Napier. Access to the park is through a two-lane roundabout, so please exercise caution and ensure you are in the outside lane for a safe entrance.
We also encourage you to explore our interactive panoramic image of Pakowhai Regional Park, captured by the talented Tim Whittaker, to get a glimpse of the park's beauty before your visit.
Come and experience the tranquility and natural beauty of Pakowhai Regional Park, where the Hawke's Bay Regional Council is dedicated to enhancing our environment for all to enjoy.

Reviews
"The best park for the dog. Its a wide and spacious place to run and play and they can swim in the river while the owner can sit and watch the dog while playing with the other dog. Our dog really love this park."
"Such a beautiful park to take your fur baby or even just yourself! Gorgeous views and lots of varied tracks around! My go to walking spot."
"Very nice park to walk with your dog. Clean and good environment. A lot of trees to shade you from the strong sunlight during hot summer time."
"Really enjoyed our walk today. We don't have a dog, but enjoyed watching all the happy dogs we encountered along the way. I'm currently having to use a knee scooter, but found the tracks relatively easy to negotiate, except for needing help up a rather steep slope. I also appreciated the fact that the park is free from litter, making it an enjoyable place to be."
"Our dogs love this place. The walk around the whole park is about 2.5km, but there are shorter routes around. Great for a gentle walk as well for running with your dogs. Off the lead allowed, plenty of rubbish bins and poop bags around the park for doggy doodoo's. The stream is fantastic relief for hot dogs. Lovely plantings and fruit trees around park. There's a long drop toilet as well, down the path (half way down ?) left side path of carpark. New car park with lots of parking, some shaded parks too. Many memorials around the park for those interested. And daffodils in spring time. Great place for family picnics, but not many picnic tables, so take a rug. There are a few seats around the park and also a cool dog exercise training area."
