About Unity Park Lookout
Welcome to Unity Park Lookout, located at 116 Eglinton Road, Dunedin, New Zealand. As you explore the vibrant city center of Dunedin, with its array of cafes, bars, restaurants, museums, and galleries, don't forget to venture into the natural beauty that lies just above the city. The Town Belt, a sprawling forest along the hills, offers a perfect escape for a leisurely walk, and I'm here to guide you to the most breathtaking sections, where you can enjoy panoramic views.
My personal favorite spot in the Town Belt is Unity Park Lookout. Due to its proximity to our home, my family and I frequently visit this picturesque location. From here, you can gaze out over the city, harbor, peninsula, and catch a glimpse of St Clair / St Kilda Beach. It's a delightful place to park your car, savor some takeaways, and appreciate the mesmerizing scenery. Additionally, there's a spacious field where you can burn off some calories by running around.
If you're up for a walk, you can easily reach Unity Park Lookout from the town center in approximately 30 minutes. Take a stroll up Stafford Street or High Street, and you'll pass by magnificent old villas that resemble castles.
From Unity Park Lookout, continue walking down Eglinton Road, and you'll discover another expansive field with a rugby clubhouse on one side. Nearby, there's another viewpoint and a track that leads down the hill towards Maitland Street. This entire area surrounding Unity Park Lookout offers stunning views, making it an ideal place for a leisurely stroll. If you're heading back into town, you can even cut through the old cemetery.
From Unity Park Lookout, follow the town belt (and some adjacent streets) all the way back to the Octagon / George Street. It's difficult to get lost if you have a general sense of direction, but Google Maps is always a helpful tool! The route we usually take is up Eglinton Road, then onto Maori Road, where you can walk along the forest trails near Jubilee Park before returning to Maori Road. Along this path, you'll be treated to beautiful harbor views, elegant villas, and the castle-like Otago Boys High School.
In my opinion, the route I've described showcases the very best of Dunedin's Town Belt. However, there are other sections to explore as well. One day, I ventured all the way to Woodhaugh Gardens and beyond, which was equally delightful. Most people only walk a portion of these tracks, so you can either follow my advice or choose a section closer to your accommodation and embark on your own adventure. It's truly remarkable to have such natural beauty so close to the heart of Dunedin – just another reason why it's the best city in New Zealand!
