Careys Bay Historic Hotel
About the Business
Welcome to Careys Bay Historic Hotel, a charming establishment located on the banks of Otago Harbour in Dunedin, New Zealand. Nestled next to an active fishing port, our team is constantly inspired by the bountiful seafood being landed within sight of our kitchen.
Although we no longer offer accommodation, our hotel remains a true Victorian pub, boasting a stellar reputation for serving fresh seafood meals and providing friendly, old-fashioned hospitality. We take pride in utilizing locally caught fish such as sole, brill, monkfish, tarikihi, blue cod, Otago Queen scallops, and Otago Littleneck clams. Additionally, we source oysters, mussels, salmon, and fish from other regions of New Zealand.
Our cuisine focuses on a delightful blend of fresh seafood and traditional pub fare. Menu favorites include our famous beer-battered fish and chips, creamy seafood chowder, salmon and monkfish pie, and our signature Seafood Platter. Rest assured, our kitchen has proudly held an "A" grade hygiene certification since 2006, ensuring the utmost cleanliness and quality in every dish.
Whether you're seeking a casual dining experience or a place to unwind with a drink, Careys Bay Historic Hotel is the perfect destination. Immerse yourself in the rich history of our Victorian pub, savor the flavors of our delectable seafood, and enjoy the warm hospitality that has made us a beloved point of interest in Dunedin.

"Lovely place. Great coffee. Top quality service. Good food. Friendly, happy, and informative staff, beautiful views. Very popular. Definitely make reservations. Go there, it's just a wonderful place to enjoy a good meal in a relaxed atmosphere."
"Great food variety and quite affordable. The food tastes great as well. Parking is a little tough. But you will definitely enjoy the drive. Try to go in the afternoon, rake a walk along the beach and then go for dinner. Excellent place for small parties. The people who work there are wonderful. Good place for children and good children mwnu as well."
"Delicious fish and chips enjoyed by all of us. Fish cooked to perfection. Lovely atmosphere. It was busy and we were warned that it might take some time to get our meals. That was ok as we were in no rush."
"Best seafood I had in New Zealand. Highly recommend bluff oysters and seafood platter. Very cosy and beautiful outdoor dining and also kids friendly. Very friendly and helpful staff. I would see this is my favourite restaurant in New Zealand!"
"So good we went back twice in a week! I absolutely loved the food here. The seafood platter is ridiculously good value for money, especially the large one. It has a bit of everything: fried battered fish, pan-fried fish, salt and pepper squid, mussels, clams, scallops, and ceviche. All delicious. I also had the shellfish bowl, which was mussels, clams and scallops cooked in a creamy broth, with a couple of pieces of bread and butter for soaking the sauce. I'd also recommend an extra cheese roll to dip or some chips to soak in it (I'm weird, I know). On our second visit we also tried the chowder and that was excellent. 100% recommend, just so good! Go and then enjoy the resulting food coma!"
