Welcome to Plato, located at Dunedin, Birch Street, 2. As an establishment, food, point of interest, and restaurant, our philosophy is simple - we aim to provide good food, matched with good service, in comfortable surroundings. With our long-standing presence in Dunedin, we have become an integral part of the local food scene. Situated right by the harbour, our specialty is fresh fish.

At Plato, we prioritize locally sourced ingredients, obtaining them as close as possible to ensure freshness. Additionally, we offer our own wine from Central Otago, perfectly complementing our dishes. In addition to our dining experience, we provide two function rooms, catering options, and custom-made cakes.

You can find us in the old Seafarers Hostel below the Otago Peninsula overpass, with the entrance located off Roberts Street. We are currently seeking passionate chefs with any level of experience to join our small, family-run team. As a unique offering, we also brew contemporary craft beers using traditional methods in the old seafarers' laundry. However, if you can't make it to our establishment, don't worry. We can bring Plato's hospitality to you.

With access to delicious fresh produce and seafood right on our doorstep, we are able to curate ever-changing menus with the best ingredients. We prioritize the use of locally sourced ingredients, including the finest South Island fish, seafood, and meats.

From a la carte options to set menus, Plato has something for almost everyone. Here's a taste of what is currently on offer: Salmon fillet marinated in soy and pan-seared, served on steamed rice with a chunky wakame seaweed and avocado salsa, finished with roasted kiwifruit and lemon butter. Alternatively, you can try our cold smoked Wakanui sirloin cooked to your liking, served on mustard mashed potatoes and finished with local shellfish steamed in a garlic cream. Another option is our hot smoked white fish baked in a leek, mustard, and bacon sauce, topped with creamy mash, cold smoked cheese, and finished under the grill. For starters, we offer a platter of confit garlic, local feta, olives, and house-made chutneys with toasted ciabatta. Finally, indulge in our New York-style baked cheesecake, flavored with lemon zest and served with strawberry compote and whipped cream.
