The Refinery

Welcome to The Refinery, a charming cafe nestled in the heart of Paeroa, New Zealand. Located at 5 Willoughby Street, this establishment is not just a cafe, but also a point of interest and a restaurant. With its rich history and unique offerings, The Refinery is a must-visit destination for both locals and tourists alike.

Originally commissioned as the National Bank Gold Refinery in 1914, the building itself is steeped in history. Its massive solid concrete walls, double height stud capped with huge timber beams, and Rimu roof structure exude grandeur and character. Step inside and you'll find a large, light-filled space that manages to be both cozy and welcoming. In the winter, you can sink into one of our armchairs by the roaring fire, while in the summer, you can enjoy our rustic outdoor tables surrounded by ivy-covered walls.

At The Refinery, we pride ourselves on serving delicious food made from scratch every day, using the best available ingredients. Our menu features all-day breakfasts, grilled sandwiches, and bowls, complemented by an ever-changing selection of baked goods and salads at the counter. We prioritize sourcing free-range eggs and bacon, as well as local produce whenever possible, ensuring that every bite is fresh and flavorful.

But The Refinery offers more than just great food. We also provide 50's inspired boutique accommodation on-site, making it the perfect place to stay while exploring Paeroa. The Guard's Cottage, located in the grounds of the historic Gold Refinery building, offers private and charming self-contained accommodation. With its light-filled spaces and retro-inspired decor, it is arguable the best boutique accommodation in town. The cottage features a private bedroom with a queen bed, a lounge with a sofa bed, an equipped kitchen, and a bathroom with a shower. Fresh linen, complimentary Wi-Fi, and a TV are also included, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable stay.

If you're looking for a more rustic experience, The Miner's Cabin is the perfect choice. This calm and peaceful space features an open-plan layout with rustic decor, including warm wood, jute mats, and antlers. The cabin includes a loft with a double bed, a queen bed downstairs, a bathroom with a shower, fresh linen, and complimentary Wi-Fi.

Paeroa itself provides a perfect base for exploring the surrounding area. Whether you're interested in riding the Hauraki Rail Trail, exploring the Karangahake Gorge, or indulging in some antique shopping, there is something for everyone.
