"Joining Scot Halls Adult Musical Theatre class on a whim last year really was the catalyst that reignited my love of performing. I moved from Whangarei down to Hamilton for university and kind of felt like a fish out of water and wasn't sure if I should carry on trying after quite a few unsuccessful auditions. This class has honestly helped my confidence grow so much both with my actual on stage presence and the belief in myself that I can do it. I don't feel as nervous to tackle iconic showtunes because we learn the tools and vocal techniques to help us. It was particularly helpful to have Scot and the other guest teachers who are all limitless pools of knowledge. They all treated us as individuals and didn't try to make us fit into certain moulds. They simply worked with us to help strengthen our skills. A highlight has to be our choreography sessions with the wonderful Michaela Gilling because we get to let loose, have a boogie and learn new choreographic and movement qualities. Also the friendships I've made in this course of sessions make it for sure one of my favourite times of the week. It's people from all walks of life coming together to create absolute magic and I am so grateful for this class for that. Could not recommend it enough to anyone wanting to take their performing to the next level or even someone who's always wanted to give musical theatre a go."
"Walking into my first lesson with Scot Hall voice studio I had no musical experience on or off the stage whatsoever, I was very nervous about how my wide eyed ambitions of playing "The Phantom Of The Opera" was going to be received, however Scot instantly made me feel comfortable and my long term goals were met with nothing but encouragement. Over the next five years Scot was able to build my confidence as a performer, develop my interest in the voice as an instrument beyond higher, louder, longer, and that confidence and desire to learn split out into all aspects of my Life. What Scot does fantastically that not alot of teachers do is he understands the notion that every student is different and learns in their own unique ways and is able to adapt towards the individual needs through the songs they resonate with making learning music a fun thing to look forward to, it's no surprise that so many of students stay for so long."
"After some less than pleasant experiences with singing teachers as a child, I came to Scot as a very nervous singer, and my time working with him has been absolutely transformational. There has never been any question as to whether I was a good singer, the assumption has always been that I am, and so I got on board with the idea and my confidence has grown immeasurably. I have loved that through learning with Scot, I have an understanding of the actual mechanics of my voice and what’s happening in there, and can produce sounds I could only dream of as a young musical theatre geek!"
"I have been a student of Scot’s for going on 8 years, and in the last two I have taken on and off lessons in-between my studies at the National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Arts (NASDA). I have learnt some amazing skills in singing and even acting techniques that have helped me throughout my journey in the performing arts. I started lessons as a fun hobby since I loved to sing, and Scot helped me build the techniques needed for the musical theatre world. He has supported and helped me on countless auditions that sometimes I would throw at him a few days prior, for which he kindly found spare time. During many of my recent auditions I have been praised for my vocal improvement since the last time I had auditioned with the company, and they would always ask who my tutor was, which I would proudly say was Scot Hall. Scot has helped me to realise my dream in the performing arts industry and has always encouraged me to pursue it. Which led me into auditioning for NASDA, which has been the best decision I have ever made. Scot not only helps you to get the best vocal techniques but will explain why they are useful for particular styles. Although I am training in musical theatre, through my lessons with Scot he has allowed me to be as broad as I possibly can be - teaching me folk and opera for example so I could be ready for any audition. I know that Scot tailors his lessons to my desires and future goals, but if I ever want to change it up he is willing and able to discuss and help me with whatever I am wanting to do even if it’s adding in some Pop songs or gaining repertoire for singing at a school function. I truly believe that I would not be where I am today or as confident with my voice if I hadn’t spent these years studying with Scot. Not only is he a fantastic teacher but he truly cares for each one of his students which you can see in all his showcases throughout the year, which I was lucky enough to be apart of his very first back in 2014. If you are thinking of starting lessons in singing I would highly highly recommend Scot."
"I began lessons with Scot in 2016 and he has been a shining light in my musical endeavours thus far. I come from a classical background and through Scot’s teaching I’ve gained confidence in my vocal ability across different genres. His encouragement and vocal techniques will continue to influence my singing for many years to come. Most recently, I applied and was accepted into Victoria University for Jazz Performance, I credit this achievement to Scot. Scot has an admirable ability to adapt and understand my singing goals, with lessons constructed to suit. This assures me I’m building my repertoire on stable foundations, so by the time of refining a piece with Scot I feel as though the song has become second nature for me to sing. I’ve always found Scot to be a very inspiring teacher and his lessons having an invaluable impact - leaving me with the feeling of being fulfilled in my singing ability."
