Karakariki Track Carpark
About the Business
Welcome to the Karakariki Track Carpark, located in the beautiful Karakariki Scenic Reserve in the Waikato region of New Zealand. This establishment is not only a park and point of interest, but also a popular tourist attraction for nature enthusiasts and families alike.
Situated at Whatawhata, on Karakariki Valley Road, this hidden gem offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. As you embark on your journey, you will be greeted by the mesmerizing sight of a waterfall, surrounded by lush greenery and picturesque landscapes.
The track to the waterfall from the carpark takes approximately 20 minutes one way, offering a leisurely stroll through suspension bridges and a variety of terrains. The adventure continues as you follow the stream through a small bush remnant and open grassy areas, immersing yourself in the natural beauty that surrounds you.
After crossing the second suspension bridge, it won't be long before you reach the enchanting small waterfall. This spot is perfect for a family picnic, where you can enjoy the serene atmosphere while paddling in the crystal-clear stream. For an even more delightful experience, venture upstream beyond the waterfall and explore the rocks and water, where you might even discover fossils.
For those seeking a more challenging adventure, you can choose to cross the unbridged stream on the true left side, beyond the second suspension bridge. From here, a steep climb will lead you to a bush-covered ridge, offering a unique perspective of the reserve. However, please note that the track ends at the boundary fence, and climbing it is strictly prohibited.
The Karakariki Track Carpark is particularly suitable for families with children, offering an enjoyable and educational experience. Although it can be muddy, especially during winter, this track is still accessible and perfect for summer walking. So don't forget to pack a picnic, your hiking shoes, and a sense of adventure.
To reach the Karakariki Track Carpark, simply turn off the Hamilton/Raglan Highway (SH23) onto Karakariki Rd, then take a left onto Karakariki Valley Rd until you reach the car park at the road end. Prepare to be captivated by the natural wonders that await you at this hidden gem in the heart of New Zealand.

"Nice walk, good for kids."
"What an easy beautiful walk to the waterfalls, and then a nice little challenge to get to the fence line, will definitely be back with the picnic gear."
"Great walk. It took about 20 minutes to get to the waterfall. Track is fairly easy. A couple of fences you have to climb over (they have the wooden steps to get over them). Couple of single file swing bridges too. Very cool walk for kids. Waterfall didn't have much room to sit as there were a few other families, but there is a spot just before that's not hard to miss; that's perfect for young ones. It was a great day out."
"Lovely little walk. You cross two suspension bridges before getting to the waterfall. About a 20 - 30 minute walk that is fine for kids too."
