Hillcrest Childcare

Welcome to Hillcrest Childcare, located in Hamilton, Carrington Avenue, New Zealand. As an establishment and point of interest, we pride ourselves on providing a unique and enriching experience for children of all ages.

At Hillcrest Childcare, we embrace the traditional Māori concept of tuakana–teina, where older children guide and support younger ones. This fosters a sense of community and collaboration within our learning environment. We believe that the wellbeing of each child is interconnected with the wellbeing of their teachers, parents, and whānau (extended family). We value and respect the diverse cultures and aspirations of our families.

As part of our curriculum, we take weekly walks around the community, exploring and learning about our local area, including papatuanuku (the earth), kura (school), library, and shops. We strive to create a respectful, positive, and warm environment where every child feels accepted and valued. Building responsive and reciprocal relationships with children, parents, whanau, and the wider community is a priority for us.

In our inclusive environment, we encourage children to form relationships with their peers, teaching them acceptance and love for everyone. We also teach them about the rich history, present, and future of the Waikato region. Our curriculum empowers children to recognize and enhance their own mana (personal power) while supporting the mana of others. This is in line with our Hillcrest treaty of caring for ourselves and others.

At Hillcrest Childcare, we believe that children are active participants in their own learning. Our teachers plan and set up the environment based on the interests of the children, encouraging their participation and contribution to a wide range of rich experiences. We ensure that all children are respected, valued, and protected from harm.

The Te Whare Tapa Wha model plays a significant role in our individual planning and assessment. We understand that a child's holistic wellbeing - hinengaro (mind), tinana (body), whatumanawa (emotions), wairua (spirit), and whanau (family) - must be balanced for optimal learning and development.

Our dedicated kaiako (teachers) have a deep understanding of how children learn and develop. They create a nurturing and stimulating environment where children can thrive and reach their full potential.
