"During heavy downpours multiple defences are used to treat water coming from Highway SH1. Contaminated stormwater fills the planted area first, then any surplus water spills through to the filter chamber and rocks. Here a special filling soaks up contaminants including hydrocarbons and heavy metals. Cleansed water from treatment areas pit drains slowly to Puhinui Stream water system below."
