About Waterwise @ Milford
Welcome to Waterwise @ Milford, located in Auckland, New Zealand. Our institution is a point of interest and a school, dedicated to fostering the personal development of young people by building their confidence in a marine environment.
Waterwise has a clear set of objectives, which include establishing and developing a safe and enjoyable learning environment for our students. As a purely voluntary organization, we rely on a dedicated group of individuals who train parents to pass on essential skills to pupils from member schools. To ensure the highest standards, Yachting N.Z. appoints examiners who undergo additional training.
At Waterwise, we cater to varying interests and abilities by planning sequential learning activities for each child. Our focus is on enjoyment, understanding of the water environment, awareness of personal limitations, and knowledge of potentially dangerous conditions. We prioritize safety over competitive endeavors.
Waterwise operates in primary and intermediate schools during school hours, guaranteeing that each student receives a minimum of three half-day sessions per term in the first and fourth terms. We encourage our pupils to enjoy the marine environment of New Zealand safely and promote conservation, self-responsibility, and common sense.
Waterwise is not a learn-to-sail program. Instead, we operate in schools to promote confidence in the marine environment through education and a thorough understanding of water safety principles.
To ensure continuous improvement and information sharing, members of each Waterwise Centre Board of Management regularly meet. They formed The N.Z. Schools Waterwise Society Inc. to raise additional funding and promote the Waterwise concept throughout New Zealand.
The Waterwise concept was conceived in April 1980 on the shores of Lake Pupuke, Auckland, during a school-working bee. The principal of Milford Primary School and a group of parents had a vision that led to the formation of The Pupuke Schools Waterwise Society. After extensive voluntary work, representatives from six member schools, The Education Department, Yachting N.Z., The Water Safety Council, and local service organizations and businesses came together to provide essential resources.
The society was officially incorporated in February 1982 and started operations in October of the same year. In April 1983, the late Diana, Princess of Wales, officially opened the Pupuke Waterwise Centre.
Today, there are four Waterwise centers in North Shore City, catering to over 5000 pupils annually. Additionally, there is one center in Rodney, three in Auckland, with two more in development, and several in various forms across New Zealand. Waterwise has also expanded its operations to the United States and has received inquiries from New Zealand.
Waterwise is widely recognized as the most successful program in New Zealand for teaching youngsters about water safety and introducing young sailors to the sport at around the age of ten.
