About Auckland War Memorial Museum
Welcome to the Auckland War Memorial Museum, located in Auckland, New Zealand. Our museum is not only an establishment and a point of interest, but also a renowned tourist attraction that offers a wide range of experiences for visitors.
One of the highlights of our museum is our extensive collection, which can be explored online. With over 1 million records, you can browse and contribute to New Zealand's Online Cenotaph, honoring and remembering the country's servicemen and women.
We are open from 10AM to 5PM on weekdays, and from 9AM to 5PM on weekends, public holidays, and school holidays. Additionally, we have late opening hours every Tuesday until 8.30PM, allowing visitors to have more time to enjoy our exhibits.
Currently, we have a special exhibition showcasing ancient Egyptian culture, providing a fascinating insight into the life along the banks of the Nile. This exhibition is only available for a limited time, so make sure not to miss it.
Another unique feature of our museum is the opportunity to see two of the rarest, real T. rex skeletons ever discovered. Named Peter and Barbara, these skeletons are displayed in a world-first exhibition that can only be seen at Auckland Museum.
For those interested in photography, we offer a Kiwi road trip experience with one of Aoteoroa's most iconic photographers. You can meet colorful characters, visit local landmarks, and discover hidden treasures through the lens of this talented artist.
We also celebrate various cultural events and language weeks. Currently, we are celebrating Rotuma Language Week, featuring a poem and interview from poet David Eggleton, showcasing Rotuman items from our collections, and illuminating our iconic building in the colors of the Rotuman flag.
If you are interested in learning how to preserve and care for your precious belongings at home, our original video series called Keepsafes provides tips and tricks from our Collection Care team. They will guide you on how to ensure your photos, heirlooms, wedding dresses, and more stand the test of time.
During Archaeology Week, we invite you to connect with the people of the past through clues and treasures they've left behind. It's an opportunity to piece together their stories and gain a deeper understanding of our shared history.
We are also proud to present the exhibition "Toró: é tudo tanto," entirely curated by a diverse collective of artists of Brazilian heritage in Aotearoa New Zealand. This exhibition features stunning, vibrant artworks and interactive elements, inviting visitors to reflect on the experience of otherness and its contradictions.
In addition to our exhibitions, we are delighted to announce that our Te Ao Mārama South Atrium has won the World Architecture Festival INSIDE: Public Buildings Award for 2022. This prestigious recognition highlights our commitment to architectural excellence.
If you become a Museum Member, you will enjoy unlimited free entry to all paid exhibitions, discounted event tickets, and exclusive member-only events. It's the gift that keeps on giving throughout the year.
For those who can't visit us in person, we offer an at-home Museum experience, allowing you to enjoy some of the best parts of Tāmaki Paenga Hira from the comfort of your own home.
Our museum is a treasure trove of taonga (treasures) from Māori, the peoples of Oceania and New Zealand, and our natural world. You can explore these treasures across three floors of magnificent galleries, immersing yourself in the rich cultural heritage of New Zealand.

Reviews of Auckland War Memorial Museum
"Spectacular museum!! Plenty to see and do. We spent 4 hours there exploring and immersing ourselves in Maori Culture. The TRexs are not to be missed and we had fun with locating the AR dinos throughout the museum! Definitely worth the price of admission."
"Staff are always friendly and professional. It’s not just about history but also New Zealand culture and nature. My kids love this museum, not only there is a kid zone, but also volcanoes where they get to learn about the history of volcanic eruptions in NZ and experience a simulation of the eruption. There also different exhibitions throughout the year."
"Excellent place to visit for rainy day - indoor activities. We visited the current exhibition-Egypt - in the time of Pharaohs. Very informative and unique displays. They have a gift shop which have good selections of souvenirs. The restaurant inside there is very good too. We enjoyed the visit."
"The Auckland War Memorial Museum is a must-visit attraction that immerses you in Auckland's rich history. I had the pleasure of exploring it on a rainy afternoon and discovered that it's free for Auckland residents, creating a vibrant atmosphere even in gloomy weather. The museum beautifully showcases Maori culture, offering an insightful journey into their traditions and heritage. While tickets may be slightly pricey for foreigners, the experience is undoubtedly worthwhile. If you're a museum lover, allocate more than four hours to fully appreciate the extensive exhibits. Prepare to be captivated by the fascinating stories and immerse yourself in Auckland's vibrant past at the Auckland War Memorial Museum."
"Went to see Peter - fantastic to see an example up close. Overall the museum is a pretty good stop. Lines can be a little long, and some of the 'modern' exhibit styles struggle to present a cohesive narrative (why are these things here together?). But the majority of the exhibits are well put together and show a rich history with good background information."
