Poneke Kyokushin Karate Dojo
About the Business
Welcome to Poneke Kyokushin Karate Dojo, a world-class institution offering traditional Japanese Kyokushin Karate and more to kids and adults in Wellington, New Zealand. Led by Chris Gower, one of two authorized IKO Branch Chiefs in the country, our dojo is committed to upholding the exacting international standards set by the International Karate Organisation Kyokushinkaikan (IKO).
With over forty years of training in Kyokushin karate, Chris has traveled regularly to Japan to learn and compete, constantly seeking to improve his skills and knowledge. As a member of the IKO, becoming a part of Poneke Dojo means you will be welcomed at similar dojos around the world, and your grades will be recognized internationally.
Established in 1999 as Mt Vic Dojo and now located in Mt Cook, Poneke Dojo has become one of New Zealand's most successful karate clubs. We have produced many generations of black belts and consistently have a strong team of national and international competitors. Our full-time facility in Mt Cook boasts experienced and capable instructors, providing top-quality training and coaching.
At Poneke Dojo, we value both our connection to traditional Japanese karate and the latest in sport science and coaching techniques. We also embrace Wellington's inclusive culture, creating a friendly and relaxed atmosphere throughout the club. But don't just take our word for it - come and experience it for yourself. We offer two weeks of free training with no obligation to join, so you can try out a variety of classes and see if Poneke Dojo is the right fit for you.
Our kids karate classes are tailored to specific age groups, allowing us to focus on their developmental needs and build their physical and social confidence. We have young black belts and experienced high grades teaching the younger children, serving as excellent role models and teaching them valuable life skills beyond just martial arts techniques. Our retention rate is fantastic, as the kids understand that the path to black belt and leadership is within reach.
But don't just take our word for it. Here's what one of our parents and school teachers had to say: "Friendly and welcoming with a focus on what is best for the students. Chris is a great teacher who relates well to students of all ages (and their parents). [Chris] has a strong set of values that teach the Kyokushin way."

"Ever since I first walked into the dojo it seemed like everyone in the class was there to help me improve and get stronger. After a while I noticed that I was improving but more importantly I had adopted the philosophy of improving others as a means of getting there. This is a strong dojo with a solid philosophical foundation. Highly recommended"
"Absolutely amazing dojo. Instructors are helpful and is open almost every day. Classes for every skill level and for any fitness level"
