About the Business
Welcome to Karamatura Falls and Tom Thumb kauri tree, a stunning natural attraction located in the southern part of Waitakere Ranges Regional Park, Auckland. This establishment is a must-visit for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.
The highlight of this institution is the magnificent 15-meter Karamatura Falls, which forms part of the picturesque Karamatura Stream. As you explore the area, you'll also come across a series of smaller waterfalls that add to the charm of the surroundings.
To reach Karamatura Falls, it is approximately a 45-minute drive from Auckland City. The road leading to the falls is always sealed, ensuring a smooth journey. Simply follow the road to Huia village and turn left immediately past the bridge. Continue along Huia Road for 800 meters until you reach a well-signposted carpark, where you'll find convenient parking facilities, toilets, and a well-maintained picnic area.
Embark on the Karamatura Loop Walk from the carpark, which offers an easy and enjoyable hike for the first 30 minutes. Afterward, switch onto the tramping Karamatura Track, and within 15-20 minutes, you'll spot a sign indicating the falls. Take a short side track branching off from the main track, leading you down to the base of the waterfall. Please note that the last section of the track can be slippery, so proper hiking shoes are recommended. The journey to the falls takes approximately 5 minutes. Remember to bring a towel, as there is a lovely swimming spot at the base of the waterfall. If the weather isn't warm enough for a dip, you can relax on top of a large rock near the falls or enjoy a picnic lunch.
While exploring the area, don't miss the opportunity to discover two additional cascades located downstream from the main waterfall. The first cascade is easily accessible, while the second one requires a bit more effort to reach.

Reviews
"Easy short loop. Small waterfall and swimming hole about 45 minutes up the track. Pathway graded now to a smooth gravel track. Climb the stairs up to the fork if you want a harder challenge. Or run it, if you're keen."
"Great place for small easy hike and swim in waterfall. Can do up to MacDonald trek for good lookout but lots of stairs and climb"
"A moderately easy walk to a small waterfall that is also suitable for swimming. The drive to the beginning of the track is along a narrow and winding road so caution is needed. Many of the drivers along this area are confident and will quickly grow impatient of slow drivers. Pull over and allow others to pass you on the road if you notice someone traveling close behind you. The track is sealed and well formed after being recently upgraded to help protect the Kauri trees from dieback disease. The waterfall at the end of the track is a must if you have made the journey to do the walk, there is a suitable area for swimming at the base of the falls - though getting to the pool can be a little tricky. Take your time. This can be a popular track especially during the summertime and the carpark can reach capacity quickly, so you may need to park on the side of the main road."
"Great place for my first time hiking. Took my boy with me as well. Both of us love it. The only shame is the track to the water fall was closed due to protection to kauri. Understandable though."
"Great waterfall. Ice cold water and a 30min walk uphill!"
