Wainoni Park

In response to the major residential growth in the area, the parks team took the initiative to work closely with landowners, community groups, and sporting organizations to create a unified vision for the park. The local community was actively involved in the development plan, with even the students from the nearby primary school contributing their ideas for the playground. Additionally, two equestrian clubs, the ratepayers association, and the local sports clubs were engaged in the process.

The design process was led by council landscape architects, with support from external designers. To minimize disruption for existing park users, the project was staged over several years. The improvements made to Wainoni Park were extensive, including upgrades to existing facilities, the creation of new access points, walkways, a boardwalk, and bridges. A new entrance and car park were also added, along with beautiful landscaping. Sports field upgrades and the installation of floodlights addressed concerns about the quality and availability of sports fields. Furthermore, the main ephemeral streams within the park were re-vegetated to enhance their ecological value.

One of the highlights of Wainoni Park is the bespoke playground that celebrates the history of Greenhithe, incorporating pre-settlement and colonial themes. The success of this unique playground led to the addition of more support facilities, such as seating and shade, to further enhance the experience for visitors.

At the northern and southern ends of the park, you will find the Greenhithe Pony Club and Greenhithe Riding for the Disabled, both of which lease the land from Auckland Council. These two organizations have had a significant impact on the improvements made to the park and often collaborate, benefiting each other and the wider community.
