Wing Tsun Academy
About the Business
Welcome to the Wing Tsun Academy, located in the heart of Wellington on Cuba Street. Our institution is dedicated to teaching the ancient Chinese martial art of Wing Tsun Kuen, also known as Wing Chun. We pride ourselves on providing students with a comprehensive training method that covers both the practical and theoretical aspects of Wing Chun.
If you are new to Wing Chun and curious about what sets it apart from other martial arts, we invite you to learn more about its unique attributes. Wing Chun emphasizes a systematic approach to martial arts, similar to how one would learn the strategic game of chess. Just as in chess, students start by understanding the basic movements and then progress to exploring the strengths and weaknesses of each technique. Through training with different partners, students learn how to apply their knowledge and adapt to various opponents' actions and styles.
Unlike many other martial arts styles, Wing Chun does not rely on set moves or rehearsed sequences. Instead, our training focuses on developing an understanding of energy, applicability, suitability, timing, strategy, and other essential aspects of response. This approach prepares students to react purposefully and effectively in real-life situations, where each encounter presents a unique combination of factors.
Sensitivity and speed are crucial in Wing Chun, and our teaching methods are designed to cultivate these qualities. By practicing Wing Chun forms and following the Wing Chun Maxims, students develop sensitivity and muscle memory that enable them to respond swiftly to any situation. This eliminates the need to memorize specific responses for every possible attack variation, providing a faster and more fluid reaction.
At the Wing Tsun Academy, we understand the importance of overall fitness and flexibility in martial arts training. Our foundation classes cater to individuals of all fitness levels, allowing you to progress at your own pace. Our workouts focus on safe bodyweight exercises that minimize joint strain while maximizing strength, power, endurance, and cardiovascular fitness. Additionally, we prioritize the development of flexibility, agility, balance, and core strength, all of which are essential for mastering Wing Chun.
As a full-scale martial arts school, the Wing Tsun Academy offers a variety of classes to cater to the Wellington community. In addition to Wing Tsun Kung Fu training for adults and children, we also provide classes on philosophy, meditation, fitness, and weapons. Our goal is to offer a holistic approach to martial arts education and empower our students to achieve their full potential.
Join us at the Wing Tsun Academy and embark on a journey of self-discovery, discipline, and personal growth through the practice of Wing Chun. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced martial artist, our dedicated instructors are here to guide you every step of the way. Come and experience the transformative power of Wing Chun at our esteemed institution on Cuba Street, Wellington.

"Training at Wing Tsun Academy has been a great experience. Dai-Sifu Kuhno and Sifu Zhou (instructors) are knowledgeable and very supportive of students. They welcome questions and are ready to help and develop, regardless of your fitness level and background in martial art. Although the style of Wing Tsun is the primary focus, the instructors incorporate aspects of other martial arts, which makes training interesting and thought-provoking. I highly recommend Wing Tsun Academy if you're looking to challenge yourself and expand in martial art."
"I have been training with the Wing Tsun Academy for a bit longer than 2 years. Dai-Sifu Kuno and Sifu Zhou are both excellent teachers, sharing their individual skills and experiences with the students. Training is provided in a very holistic way to become a martial artist, which is developing the students martial arts skills, physical fitness but also, equally important, a mindset that is applicable in all areas of the student's life and connects t all together.. Thus, training is very challenging, but the Sifus acknowledge the students own pace of learning. There are a variety of classes offered, and students in these classes are great to train, mix and mingle with. Highly recommended martial arts school."
"My two children attended the children's class Saturday mornings and enjoyed the style of instruction as delivered by Sifu Zhou. The class offered fitness training and all the basics of martial arts that one would expect but in a kid friendly, fun and engaging manner. Sifu Zhou was very creative and each session differed in the way the students practiced the same elements of Wing Tsun. The dojo is very well resourced in tools that assist students to develop Wing Tsun. I recommend the academy highly."
"After several years of training at the Wing Tsun Academy I can vouch for it being a friendly, embracing gwun - with a solid community of people from all walks of life. WTA takes kung fu seriously and doesn't cut corners; the Sifu's are uncompromising in their desire to create good martial artists and teach the Wing Tsun system. The Academy combines elements of traditional Shaolin kung fu with an emphasis on fitness, focus, confidence, and effective (non-trivial) martial arts application. I have enjoyed my time there very much and look forwards to many more years of training."
"I've been training here for almost two and a half years. I've really benefitted from a inclusive and non-aggressive learning environment, it's allowed me to become much more confident in confrontational situations and be much more grounded in myself. The two teachers who run the gwoon have a lot of experience and understanding about Wing Tsun, and there's also fitness and flexibility classes to compliment the training. It's really welcoming for people of all walks of life, whether you're a beginner to martial arts or have been doing it for some time. And it's really welcoming for women too! It can be daunting getting into a martial art but I really trust the teachers and the people I train with. Would definitely recommend."
