Island Psychology
About the Business
Welcome to Island Psychology, a trusted establishment located at 52 McIvor Highway in Kennington, Australia. We are a point of interest and a health institution that provides a safe haven amidst the chaos of life. With our locations in Bendigo and Castlemaine, we specialize in working with individuals, couples, children, and adolescents, offering evidence-based psychological interventions for a range of mental health issues.
At Island Psychology, our main goal is to help our clients find solace in the present moment and accept the things that are beyond our control. Through therapy, we aim to guide individuals towards building meaning and focusing on the aspects of life that are within their control.
We understand that the journey to adulthood is not a straight line, and many children, adolescents, and families face various challenges along the way. Our experienced therapists utilize a range of evidence-based interventions when working with children and adolescents, always considering the importance of the family system.
Our therapists have expertise in addressing social difficulties, attachment concerns, emotional dysregulation, developmental differences, mood disorders, behavioral concerns, and neurodivergence such as Autism and ADHD. We are neurodiversity affirming and approach support with an understanding of the social model of disability.
Depression is a common mental health concern, and seeking help can be a daunting task. However, our psychologists are here to support you in managing the symptoms and taking steps towards a fulfilling life independent of depression. We work with clients to reconnect with their values and provide strategies to improve their sense of self-worth.
Anxiety is another prevalent issue, and research shows that psychological therapies are highly effective in treating it. Our therapists have years of experience working with clients dealing with various anxiety disorders. We strive to help our clients understand how anxiety impacts their lives and develop clear therapy goals to manage anxiety and live a purposeful life.
For couples seeking relationship counseling, Campbell Townsend utilizes the Gottman Method, a highly effective approach supported by scientific studies. This structured, goal-oriented therapy combines decades of research and clinical practice from the Gottman Institute, helping couples break through barriers to achieve greater understanding, connection, and intimacy.
Island Psychology also offers trauma therapy, providing a safe space for individuals to address traumatic experiences that continue to impact their lives. Our therapists empathize with the effects of trauma on mental, emotional, behavioral, and physical well-being. Through therapy, we equip clients with skills and strategies to better understand, cope with, and process memories and emotions tied to the traumatic event, fostering a more adaptive and meaningful sense of self.
Additionally, we now offer assessments for ADHD. For adults, we administer the DIVA-5 - Diagnostic Interview for Adult ADHD, based on the criteria for ADHD in DSM-5. For children and adolescents, we conduct The Conners 4th Edition assessment, which thoroughly evaluates ADHD and its commonly co-occurring problems.

"I have been having sessions with Clinical Psychologist, Campbell Townsend for close to a year now, and I can honestly say that he has been an invaluable source of support and guidance for me. His calm demeanour and caring nature creates a safe and welcoming space for me to explore my thoughts and feelings, without judgment. Campbell has an impressive range of knowledge and expertise in various therapeutic approaches, including IFS, ACT, Mindfulness, EMDR, among others. I appreciate that Campbell has tailored his approach to meet my individual needs and preferences, and that he explains the rationale behind the techniques he uses. What I value most about working with Campbell, is how incredibly heard and understood he makes me feel. Campbell actively listens to me and validates my experiences, which has helped me gain a greater sense of self-awareness and acceptance. Overall, I highly recommend Campbell to anyone seeking a compassionate and highly skilled therapist who can provide effective, holistic and person-centred support for mental and emotional wellbeing."
