About Litchfield National Park
Welcome to Litchfield National Park, a beloved institution located in the heart of Australia's Top End. Situated at Litchfield Park Road, this establishment is not just a park, but a true point of interest and tourist attraction that showcases the stunning natural beauty of the region.
Litchfield National Park has long been a favorite among locals, offering a wide range of activities and sights to explore. From its breathtaking waterfalls that cascade into crystal clear pools, to its iconic magnetic termite mounds and weathered sandstone pillars, this park is a must-see for any visitor to the Northern Territory.
This ancient landscape has been shaped by water over countless years, and its significance to the Aboriginal people cannot be overstated. The Koongurrukun, Mak Mak Marranunggu, Werat, and Warray Aboriginal people have lived in this area for thousands of years, and their ancestral spirits are still present in the landscape today. It is a place of deep cultural importance and respect.
To access the park, visitors to the Northern Territory are required to have a park pass, which can be obtained easily. Once inside, you'll have the opportunity to explore a range of activities and attractions. Swim and relax in the series of shallow and deep holes, or take a tranquil walk along the shaded creek. Keen walkers can choose from two swimming spots, offering a perfect way to cool off after a hike. For those with a four-wheel-drive vehicle, there is a secluded campground next to East Reynolds River, providing a unique camping experience.
Picnic by the plunge pool and take a leisurely walk along Shady Creek, or venture upstream to the Tjaetaba Falls lookout for a breathtaking view. The adventurous can explore the track to Tjaynera Falls (also known as Sandy Creek Falls) and Surprise Creek Falls, accessible only by four-wheel-drive. For a more relaxed experience, take the trail walk around the rim of the falls or the accessible path to the viewing decks of Tolmer Falls. Along the creek, there are eight camp sites nestled among the serene surroundings, perfect for an overnight stay.
Safety is paramount when enjoying the water, and information on where to swim and how to be safe is readily available. Additionally, detailed information on camping locations and guidelines, as well as walking trails and their distances and grades, can be found to ensure a memorable and enjoyable visit.
Located approximately 120km south-west of Darwin, Litchfield National Park can be accessed via Cox Peninsula Road or through Batchelor. Please note that park closures may occur unexpectedly due to bushfires, flooding, or maintenance, so it's always a good idea to check for any updates before planning your visit.
The Northern Territory Government acknowledges and respects the First Nations people of this country, recognizing their enduring connections to their lands, waters, and communities. We pay our respects to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, as well as their leaders, past, present, and emerging.

Reviews of Litchfield National Park
"Stunning National Park with plenty of easily accessible waterfalls and swimming holes. Plenty of parking at most spots and public toilets at the more popular places. An easy drive in and out and a very doable day trip from Darwin"
"Litchfield National Park in September 2022. Amazing natural scenery and beautiful falls here. I recommend getting to the falls early, if you want the place to yourself. My favorite was the Tjaynera Falls. The track in was for 4WD only and there was a river crossing so this helped keep a majority of the tourists out. I had the place to myself. Stayed two nights at the Wangi Falls campground. So great to be close to Wangi Falls, could hear them at night. Incredible view of the stars at night as there is no light pollution. I saw a couple of wallabies in the morning. Thankful."
"It’s a wonderful national park. You can make a easy day trip from Darwin. Or maybe take one or two days more away from the city, enjoy the nature, and explore this amazing national park. There aren’t just beautiful waterfalls and rock pools , but also rock formations like Lost City."
"Beautiful place to visit with lots of swimming holes and waterfalls. I would recommend everyone be prepard for driving as nothing is close together. Oh and bring water it is hot."
"Amazing. Super easy to drive to all sites. Check which sites are open as some maybe closed due to the season. Camp grounds and facilities were so well kept. Very impressed and will definitely return. If you are chasing waterfalls then this is for you. No 4WD needed"
