Lyons Cottage
About the Business
Welcome to Lyons Cottage, a charming establishment located in Darwin City, Australia. Situated on the picturesque Esplanade at 74, Lyons Cottage is not only a cafe and food destination, but also a point of interest and a must-visit tourist attraction.
Step into Lyons Cottage and you will be transported back in time. Built in 1925, it is the only remaining example of colonial bungalow style architecture in Darwin. Originally constructed as accommodation for the management staff of the Darwin Cable Company and their families, the cottage was known as BAT House, named after the British Australia Telegraph Company.
Managed by the esteemed Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Lyons Cottage now houses Aboriginal Bush Traders. This unique space serves as an Aboriginal art gallery and retail store, showcasing a wide range of authentic Indigenous products. Immerse yourself in the rich culture and heritage of Australia's First Nations people as you peruse the exquisite artworks and crafts. And when hunger strikes, the bush food Café within the gallery is the perfect spot to enjoy a delicious meal or a refreshing drink.
Lyons Cottage has a fascinating history that survived the ravages of time. While many buildings along The Esplanade were destroyed during the 1937 cyclone or the Japanese bombing raids in 1942, this resilient cottage stood strong. It even served as a home for the United States Army from 1943 to 1945.
After the war, the cottage faced an uncertain future. However, thanks to the efforts of heritage-conscious residents and the devastation caused by Cyclone Tracy, plans to demolish the cottage and replace it with a hotel were thwarted. Although the cyclone caused some damage, the Cottage was meticulously restored to its post-1942 exterior, while the interior reflects the period between 1926 and 1942.
In 1984, the Museums & Art Galleries Board recognized the historical significance of Lyons Cottage and transformed it into a museum of early Darwin history. Today, it continues to be managed by the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, ensuring that its heritage is preserved for generations to come.
Since 2015, Lyons Cottage has been leased by Ironbark Aboriginal Corporation, trading as Aboriginal Bush Traders. This partnership has breathed new life into the cottage, making it a thriving hub for Aboriginal art, culture, and commerce.
Whether you're a history enthusiast, an art lover, or simply looking for a unique dining experience in the heart of Darwin, Lyons Cottage is a destination not to be missed. Come and indulge in the rich tapestry of Australian history and immerse yourself in the vibrant Indigenous culture that makes Lyons Cottage truly special.
