About Science Building
Welcome to the Science Building, located in the heart of Tasmania's beautiful city of Launceston. As an establishment and point of interest, we are proud to be a leading school that offers much more than just studying.
At the Science Building, we believe in the power of connection and offer numerous opportunities for our students to engage with new people and experiences. From exciting events to sports activities and volunteering opportunities, we encourage our students to embrace a well-rounded university experience.
One of the things we take immense pride in is our research excellence, which has a significant impact on and from Tasmania. We prioritize forming deep connections, not only within our university community but also with local industries, schools, and the entire population of our island home.
In fact, we are delighted to announce that the University of Tasmania has been ranked number one internationally for climate action. For two consecutive years, we have been recognized as the world leader in taking climate action, as confirmed by the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings. This recognition further highlights our commitment to sustainability and making a positive impact on our environment.
Within the Science Building, you will find a wealth of knowledge and opportunities to explore. For example, did you know that beneath the sparkling waters of Tasmania's 'Blue Lakes' lie three old open-cut mine pits that were once targeted for tin? Discover what's really going on in this fascinating natural wonder.
We also offer a degree that provides a global perspective on the big issues. Just ask Gemma Rushton, who took a 10-year gap before deciding to study a Bachelor of Natural Environment and Wilderness in one of the world's most incredible environments. Our degree programs are designed to broaden your horizons and equip you with the skills to tackle global challenges.
Tasmania is known for its stunning landscapes and outdoor adventures, and we fully embrace this reputation. Upadhya Anjalie Balachandra, one of our students, was captivated by Tasmania's beauty and chose to move here for university. She even took up surfing, showcasing how Tasmania has something to offer for everyone, regardless of their interests.
As the only university in the state, we have unrivaled industry access and opportunities for our students. Tasmania runs on renewable energy and is a global pioneer in hydroelectricity. This unique advantage allows our students to gain valuable hands-on experience and be at the forefront of innovation.
We are committed to reimagining education at our campuses, with a focus on providing a good education to as many Tasmanians as possible. We are transforming our University to strengthen and future-proof our ability to achieve this goal.

At the Science Building, we also celebrate the achievements of our students and researchers. Four early-career researchers have recently been awarded significant funding for their groundbreaking work, and our music students have had the privilege of taking masterclasses with internationally renowned musicians.
We firmly believe that climate change education is essential, and we are proud to be at the forefront of incorporating it into our curriculum. We understand the importance of preparing our students to be future leaders who can tackle the environmental challenges we face.
While reducing carbon emissions is crucial, we also recognize the need to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond reducing emissions and encompasses finding innovative solutions to compensate for sectors where decreasing emissions is more challenging.
