About Alligator Creek Swimming Area
Welcome to Alligator Creek Swimming Area, located in Mount Elliot, Townsville City, Queensland, Australia. Our establishment is a point of interest within the beautiful Bowling Green Bay National Park.
Covering a vast expanse of 57,900 hectares, Bowling Green Bay National Park is a stunning mosaic of coastal and mountainous landscapes. Within its boundaries, you'll find diverse habitats ranging from coastal wetlands with mangroves and saltmarsh communities to lush rainforests atop majestic mountains.
One of the park's highlights is its internationally recognized wetland, which serves as a crucial coastal habitat for waterfowl and various bird species. In fact, it has been listed under the Ramsar Convention, drawing migratory birds from around the world during the summer months.
Standing tall amidst the surrounding coastal plain is Mount Elliot, reaching an impressive height of 1221 meters. This imposing peak dominates the landscape and offers breathtaking views for those who venture to its summit.
As an establishment within this protected area, we urge visitors to help preserve its natural and cultural values for future generations. Please familiarize yourself with the guidelines on caring for parks to ensure the conservation of our environment and heritage.
Bowling Green Bay National Park was established in 1979, combining the existing Mount Elliot, Mount Burrumbush, Cape Cleveland parks, and a portion of the Bowling Green Bay wetlands. The latter, in particular, holds significant importance for waterfowl and was designated as a Ramsar site in 1993.
For further tourism information and assistance, you can visit the Townsville Visitor Information Centre or the Burdekin Visitor Information Centre. They will be more than happy to provide you with the necessary details to enhance your visit to this remarkable region.
We would like to acknowledge and pay our respects to the Traditional Owners and custodians of the land, the Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Their connection to the land, sea, and community is deeply valued and recognized by the Department of Environment and Science, which manages the park.
By visiting Alligator Creek Swimming Area and supporting the protection and growth of Queensland's protected area system, you are contributing to the important work being done to preserve our natural wonders.
We hope you have a memorable experience exploring the wonders of Bowling Green Bay National Park and enjoy your time at Alligator Creek Swimming Area.
Reviews of Alligator Creek Swimming Area
"For the Alligator falls hike At first we were a bit underwhelmed by the Grade 5 rating (Highest difficulty hike as per AUS ratings) but it does ramp up a bit. I would still say only about a Grade 4 and only because of the last 800m, which turns into less of a track and just some arrows on rocks to tell you which one to climb. You do also have to be careful crossing some parts over the creek and some tree root sections (potentially dangerous if it is raining). Most of the hike is about Grade 3 with just some steps and walking trails in around some forest or access tracks. About the crossings- we went in July and this was our experience: 1. First crossing - wet but can jump across rocks to avoid getting wet 2. Second crossing is about waist deep on me (5 foot 10) - and no getting around it. Watch out for your feet - ideally wear reed shoes or just switch to sandals for this part). Also FREEZING so its very unpleasent particularly once it reaches your privates XD 3. Third crossing about knee deep. Lots of tadpoles 4. Fourth crossing you can do by hopping over rocks so you could just wear sandshoes/hiking shoes for that part. FUN!"
"This place is absolutely beautiful, we did the hike up to the infinity pools and quite unexpectedly came across a wild pig on the track on the way up!"
"Good place to have picnic by the stream or nice shade and table to enjoy food .. but no garbage bin in the whole area."
"Nice spot for a walk or swim. Very pictuesque. Good ammenities at day use area. Water level and flow can naturally vary depending on recent weather, but usually great for a swim."
"Great place to swim in flowing fresh water stream and ponds. National Parks & Wildlife have done a great job in maintaining the paths and burning off the scrub for safety. There are many places you can swim without any over crowding during the summer months."
