Reviews of Fitzroy Island Resort
"EXPECT PROBLEMS AND CANCELLATIONS, POOR MANAGEMENT I have conflicting feelings on this review. On the plus side the island and faculties are great. Non managerial staff are hard working and will do their best to give you a good stay. However managerial staff needs to be retrained or replaced pretty much across the board. Our experience started with us calling to confirm our reservations a few weeks ahead of time and being told despite confirmation numbers we didn’t have a room. We were able to get a room, but not the type we wanted. Then a few days before they canceled our scuba diving due to staffing (see dive shop review for more info). When we showed up to our Turtle tour we were told we didn’t have a reservation on site even though we did which they later confirmed. Turns out several other groups had the same problem that day. When I went to the front desk to discuss these and other problems I talked to a manager Sabrina. She responded that the dive shop was not her department. That should never be the response for a hotel manager or any employee. “I’ll look into it” would have been better. She promised to try and get us a partial refund for the hotel stay approved, but we never got it. Also be aware food on the island is complicated. For large portions of the day there are no food options. If you want coffee or anything for breakfast only choice is to make a reservation at the fancy restaurant and wait a while or get something at the 7/11 market. It’s the only place open. For the afternoon your only Choice is pizza. Be prepared to wait an hour for it and watch for its arrival. Ours got given away to another family by mistake and it took two hours to get my kids anything to eat. Also worth noting is on the ride home the ferry broke stranding us for an hour while they fixed it. Overall these are five star facilities but not being run by management who understand how to run them properly. If cancellations and logistics problems don’t bother you it’s a great place, but those matter a lot to me."
"This experience was from April 2022 If you decide to Goto this place make sure you take food. The rooms have facilities to cook with a large fridge. Take lunch stuff, bread for toast in the morning or other breakfast food. The resort was well maintained, the rooms are clean and look modern enough with a great outlook. The walk up to the light house and summit is a must. There is limited breakfast options, and you need to book as they book out for breakfast and dinner at the restaurant. Foxys bar has good food options and take aways. While we were there most things were out of stock. No breakfast. Lunch is full of day trippers, so it can be a wait, but not a huge issue. The general store has a variety of food you can purchase, reasonable prices. Includes sandwiches pies, drinks chips etc. Can't sit at the bar pool because we didn't buy the drinks there on that day, even though the drinks we had were purchased there the previous day. Btw drinks were not yet opened and we had ordered $20 cocktails! Really! Walked into the restaurant to see the selection of beers due to the resort running out of most beer, one beer on tap, and something called xxxx. Due to it not open yet, but doors were open, we were promptly advised that they are closed and ushered us out the door while the chef eyeballed us as we walked down the path? Why? The general attitude we experienced amongst staff is appalling to its guests, seemed to be treated like second class citizens with no respect. Some staff of course we're very nice but obviously the rude ones stand out. You work for a business that has obviously struggled over the past few years, if you work at a resort then be nice to your guests and respect the people that employ you, there is always ways to talk to people instead of being abrupt. Your not here to have a holiday with your mates! Would I go back here, definately not!"
"If I were a backpacker, it would be fine. But I'm really disappointed. The room is old, the air conditioning is crazy, everything looks like in the 80s. It looked better on the Internet, Photoshop sends its regards. Compliments to the kitchen, the dinners were very good."
"The island is stunning, the sports hub team is wonderful, all staff work extremely hard and so lovely. The hotel itself is run down and terribly maintained, it is so sad because the staff work so hard but there appears to be lack of management involvement or interest in maintenance of the hotel and surrounding areas. If maintenance is not sorted out as soon as possible it will become dangerous and much more costly to fix. The staff are very dedicated I am sure they would like to see it better maintained too."
"Best snorkeling right off the beach ever. Best views, feels remote even though quite close to cairns, 45 mins, ferry. Resort and facilities are good enough but the staff is excellent. Very polite, patient, very hard working. It get very busy for an hour every time a ferry arrives and long queues at reception and dive shop but the staff handle it very well. One of the best resort staff ever met."
