About the Business
Welcome to Mundy Creek Natureway Garbutt, a hidden gem located in Queensland, Townsville City. This establishment is not just a park or a point of interest, but a true tourist attraction that offers a unique and enriching experience for nature lovers.
Stretching along the western bank of Mundy Creek in Garbutt, this site encompasses a significant grassland area, extending from the end of Lockheed Street to John Melton Black Drive (airport road). Access to this beautiful natureway is most convenient from the eastern end of Lockheed Street.
While Mundy Creek flows past well-used parks and open spaces, the surrounding natural vegetation had unfortunately suffered significant degradation over the past century, until the emergence of the Mundy Creek Natureway concept in the 1990s. Thanks to dedicated local leadership, extensive revegetation work began in 2012, with the support of enthusiastic volunteers who cleared weeds, planted native trees, and took care of the area.
The success of these efforts is evident as the first batch of trees has already matured, providing a valuable refuge and food source for numerous bird species and pollinating insects. These trees also offer interest and shade for those seeking recreational activities amidst nature's beauty.
Despite the remarkable progress of the project, managing this site remains a challenge due to the adjacent housing development and ongoing earthworks for flood mitigation. However, our commitment to preserving and enhancing this natural haven remains unwavering.
At Mundy Creek Natureway Garbutt, we conduct monthly site sessions focused on weed control, watering, and mulching new trees, ensuring the continued growth and health of the area. Moreover, we organize intermittent special activities to foster community involvement and strengthen the connection between locals and their environment, art, and cultural heritage.
Join us at Mundy Creek Natureway Garbutt and immerse yourself in the tranquility and beauty of this remarkable natural setting. Experience firsthand the incredible transformation of this once neglected area into a thriving ecosystem, and be a part of our ongoing efforts to create a sustainable future for generations to come.
