About ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies
Welcome to the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies' legacy website. Located in Townsville City, Queensland, our institution is dedicated to providing knowledge that fosters the sustainable use, adaptive governance, and effective management of the world's coral reefs to enhance human wellbeing.
Since our establishment in 2005, we have conducted innovative, collaborative, and transdisciplinary research to gain a better understanding of the dynamic changes occurring on coral reefs worldwide. This research encompasses both social and natural sciences, allowing us to develop comprehensive solutions for the challenges faced by coral reefs.
Through the support of the Australian Research Council (ARC) Centres of Excellence program, we were granted $23 million in 2005 to commence our operations. Recognizing our significant contributions to coral reef sciences, the ARC awarded us an additional $28 million in 2014 to continue our world-leading research. These funds have allowed us to build strong collaborative links with major partners and hundreds of institutions across the globe.
At the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies, we have created the world's largest concentration of coral reef scientists. Our team of dedicated researchers, staff, and students work tirelessly to communicate and implement scientific recommendations for the sustainable use and management of coral reefs.
We would like to acknowledge and pay our respects to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People, who are the first inhabitants of this nation and the Traditional Custodians of the unceded Australian lands where our staff and students live, learn, and work.
As a point of interest in Australia, our institution has made significant contributions to the field of coral reef studies. While our operations ceased in late 2022, this legacy website serves as a testament to our commitment to the preservation and understanding of coral reefs for the betterment of our planet and future generations.
