About The Cairns Institute
Welcome to The Cairns Institute, a renowned establishment and point of interest located at Smithfield, McGregor Road, 105 in Australia. We are excited to collaborate with James Cook University researchers through the TNQ Drought Hub to enhance agricultural adaption, sustainability, and resilience.
Recently, we had the honor of hosting the National Soils Advocate, the Honourable Penelope Wensley AC, for a 2-day field trip exploring various soils restoration and rehabilitation sites. This experience allowed us to learn valuable insights into the importance of soil conservation.
In our commitment to supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in Far North Queensland, we organized a small symposium for HDR students working with these indigenous groups. This gathering facilitated the exchange of knowledge and fostered connections between researchers and community members.
Dr Kearrin Sims, a Fellow at The Cairns Institute, is coordinating the JCU Research Ethical Development Symposium for its second year. This symposium, taking place on 27-29 September at our institute, aims to promote ethical research practices.
At The Cairns Institute, our research focuses on addressing critical social and environmental challenges in the tropics. We strive to be visionary, multidisciplinary, and guided by principles of social justice and reciprocity.
We offer various learning opportunities through higher degree research programs, professional development courses, and collaborative research initiatives. Our aim is to empower individuals with knowledge and skills that contribute to sustainable development in the tropics.
As an institute, we actively engage in public debate and create democratic spaces for the dissemination and discussion of ideas and knowledge related to sustainable development and other pressing issues in the tropics.
Located in Tropical North Queensland, we are uniquely positioned to form partnerships with neighboring countries in the Pacific and Southeast Asia. We take pride in our cross-institutional leadership in building relationships and coalitions with regional partners.
In recognition of the rich indigenous heritage of Australia, we acknowledge and pay respect to the Aboriginal People and Torres Strait Islander People as the traditional owners of the lands where our staff and students live, learn, and work.
Join us at The Cairns Institute as we strive to make a positive impact in the tropics through research, education, and community engagement.
