About Cairns Museum
Welcome to Cairns Museum, a captivating establishment located in the heart of Cairns City, at Lake Street, 105. As a museum, point of interest, and tourist attraction, we offer a unique opportunity to dive into the fascinating history and culture of Far North Queensland.
Our incredible collection is a treasure trove of secrets and memories, providing a snapshot of the dynamic frontier region and its people. From the early settlers to the indigenous communities, we showcase the diverse stories that have shaped this beautiful corner of Australia.
At Cairns Museum, we believe in making history accessible and engaging for everyone. Our interactive and fun displays invite you to learn, play, and explore to your heart's content. We also offer a great range of inclusive activities for kids and families, ensuring that everyone can enjoy their time with us.
Behind the scenes, the Cairns Historical Society has been instrumental in nurturing and preserving the collections on display at Cairns Museum. Through their dedicated research and preservation efforts, they ensure that the remarkable history of this region is passed on to current and future generations.

One of our most intriguing artifacts is the Orator's Chair, a seat that is not meant to be sat upon. This unique piece from Laurie Bragge's collection offers a glimpse into the rich history of the Iatmul-speaking Tegoi people.
Join us for a captivating exhibition showcasing the rich history of James Cook University. Bronwyn McBurnie, Manager JCU Library Special Collections, will provide insights into a selection of treasures on display, allowing you to delve deeper into the university's fascinating past.

Reviews of Cairns Museum
"Well worth the visit. Lots of historical photos on display. Volunteers wandering around are very knowledgable with any questions asked. Museum is over three floors. Use the steps or lift. Small gift shop on ground floor. There is a fee to enter. Adults $16 Concession $12. There is a family ticket but can't recall how much it is. Lovely verandah at top to sit a while."
"Thoroughly enjoyed Cairns Museum! Engaging stories, easy to follow, and loved the fascinating biographies and facts. Plan for 1.5-2 hours to fully savor the experience and not miss any details or stories. Highly recommended!"
"Lovely little museum with extremely high quality and informative exhibits. I was very excited to see a piece of the Endeavour Tree on display, as I work at a museum that has the rest of that very tree lol. Would love to visit again and hopefully get to chat more with staff, as it was a quiet day when I visited and it seemed that there weren't many staff/volunteers on hand that day, so I didn't want to take anyone away from their busy tasks."
"Excellent. What a little gem of a place. Doesn't look like much space from the road, but enter into a magical trip into the past. It's spread out over two floors. Quiet rest spots on the balcony are perfect for views over the streets below. Alot of interesting artifacts you just don't see in a larger museum. True to the region specifically. Lovely, vibrant art, friendly staff and gifts available in the shop. Prices so reasonable for the effort put into presenting unique objects. A excellent time line of the regions also provided. Fascinating trip through history. Thank you!"
