Reviews of Scotsman's Fish + Chips + Burgers
"Ok. Friday dinner time review. Good test to see if it is good. Their busiest time. How do they handle under pressure? I got the fishermans basket. I have never had Haggis and was excited to try it (i know all about it. Traditional Scott food with offal and oats stuffed in a stomach. I lived in Japan and like Japanese miso stomach stew. I like liver. Love fried chicken hearts.) I got 2 disks of Haggis for $10. Nice. They said it was fresh from a local butcher. Nice. Fried. Nice. I dont think it was fried enough. Not so nice. I had to put it in my air fryer for 10 and i think it was ok. Tasted like a cheap meat pie. Not bad but would love to try the original. I am guessing its just liver heart and kidney without lung and other bits(due to health laws?) Chips were ok. Nothing more. Ok. Needed sauce. There are better out there. Seafood basket: 2x big fish...good. prawn with tail off ( i eat either....if the tail is on i eat the crunchy bites). Squid x2. Seafood stick x2. Apart from the fish it tasted thawed from frozen with fresh batter. The prawn were large which was nice but the rest. Meh. Fish was not fresh, you could smell the fish. A chef one said "if you can smell the fish. Dont eat the fish." I could not eat it all in one and once cool, the fish was very fishy. Not enough to be bad but you could taste it was not fresh. BUT.........The batter was not well cooked. It was limp not crunchy. I got it home and it was all stuck together like a soggy magazine. Not too bad but not worth the price. Soggy is the word. The food was probably cooked ok.....the fish was not raw but flaky and warm...but smelled like not fresh fish. I think they should fry another 2minutes at least. Chips were cooked but the others.....bit more crunch please. Service was very nice tho. Nice ppl. But food...hmmmm Overpriced? Yes. Will i try again? I will to redeem this review....i always give a second chance. RESPONSE BY COMPANY: "Thank you for taking the time to review us Pavel. Our star rating is important to us and we are sorry to see it drop after your review. We strive for perfection at all times and hope to meet your standards when we meet you again. " EDIT AFTER RESPONSE: I am sorry for the review but I did give my honest opinion of it. I am sorry to hear a drop in the review stars as I am so glad to support local businesses over giant conglomerates. But there are so many better chip shops in Cairns, and of what i have seen on the net....the Scotts are the kings of Fish and Chips (and fried foods in general). If one came over they would probably do to you what King Edward did to the country. None of my bits are answered, Just a 3 line generic reply? almost insulting (what prompted this reply). I am no Gordon Ramsay but i know what is fresh. Please at least fry at 180c or even 190 for a crispy coating. Do not let the temp drop to 160deg or below for the limy limpness as it turns it into a true Limp Bizkit (Stress and cooling of oil is what happens in busy times. I would rather wait an extra 10 minutes for the oil to turn to the correct temp than get early stodgy food). Edit a better reply please so i can edit mine again."
"I gave this review a one star because the burger was pretty good, otherwise the chips were not great as they were dry. I asked for crumbed prawn cutlets and they gave me battered but the batter was soggy as well as the seafood stick being rubbery and it's not the first time I've been here. And the price (in my opinion) isn't great for the food quality but the cheeseburger was good so I'm just genuinally curious as to why everything else was not great. It might have been a bad night."
"We grabbed chips and then lots of little bits and pieces and it was absolutely banging. Perfect to grab and take to the beach for a lazy dinner night. Only reason I didn't go 5 stars is because I like more chicken salt and because I would have liked my potato cakes a bit more crispy. But I will definitely be back and definitely recommend. Oh also some of the best fish and chip gravy I have ever had and brilliant customer service."
"Last time we got chips here my partner was so turned off by the flavour that it’s taken me four months to convince them to try your food again. Bub bahhh…. We could smell a old yucky cooking oil smell from this shop through the shopping centre car park. Our potato cakes we horrid. In 37 years of having potato cakes from around the country on our travels this was the worst I’ve had. And guess what, that old oil smell was the signature flavour of our chips also. Safe to say my partner said never again. Sad as the first time I tried food from here in early 2022 it was great. Now not at all. Sorry about this review but surly you should at least test the quality of your food you’re wrapping sometime. And I’m no expert but the oil from your cookers smells bad and old. Hence the chips tasted like it too. Two stars as the lady on the phone when we ordered had a genuinely nice style of customer service."
"Best local fish and chips shop in the suburbs of Cairns. Friendly staff, clean and spacious. Good selection of family packs, sides & salads and soft drinks."
