Old UTas Commerce Building
About the Business
Welcome to the Old UTas Commerce Building, located in the stunning Sandy Bay area of Hobart, Tasmania. As an establishment and point of interest, our school offers so much more than just studying. We believe in fostering connections and providing opportunities for our students to engage with new people and experiences.
At the Old UTas Commerce Building, we take great pride in our research excellence, which has a significant impact on Tasmania and beyond. We are committed to forming deep connections not only within our university community but also with local industries, schools, and the people who call our beautiful island home.
One of our most notable achievements is our commitment to climate action. The University of Tasmania has been ranked as the number one university internationally for climate action. For two consecutive years, we have been recognized as the world-leader in taking climate action, as rated by the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings.
But it's not just our commitment to the environment that sets us apart. Our degree programs offer a global perspective on the big issues, allowing our students to gain a comprehensive understanding of the world. Whether it's studying the Bachelor of Natural Environment and Wilderness or pursuing other niche interests, we provide an incredible environment for learning and personal growth.
Tasmania itself is a state that turns everyone into an outdoors person. With its stunning landscapes and abundance of outdoor activities, it's no wonder that students like Upadhya Anjalie Balachandra are drawn to our university. From surfing to hiking, Tasmania has something to offer for everyone, no matter how niche their interests may be.
As the only university in the state, our students enjoy unrivaled industry access and opportunities. Tasmania is a global pioneer in renewable energy, particularly hydroelectricity. This unique position allows our students to gain valuable industry experience and make a real impact in their chosen fields.
We are constantly reimagining education at our campuses, with a focus on providing a good education to as many Tasmanians as possible. Our ongoing transformation ensures that we are equipped to meet the needs of our students and future-proof their education.

Our commitment to research and academic excellence is evident in the achievements of our students and staff. We are proud to announce that four early-career researchers from the University of Tasmania have been awarded a total of $1,773,740.00 in the Discovery Early Career Researcher Awards (DECRAs), funded by the Australian Research Council.
In addition to academic achievements, we also value the arts and cultural experiences. Our music students recently had the opportunity to take a masterclass with internationally renowned horn player Stefan Dohr from the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Such experiences enrich our students' education and provide valuable insights into their chosen fields.
We believe that climate change education is essential, and we are dedicated to incorporating it into our curriculum. The inclusion of environmental topics in international tests of 15-year-olds' progress highlights the importance of this issue in today's world.
Our students are a testament to the flexibility and diversity of our programs. Whether it's juggling multiple passions or pursuing a specific career path, like Jay Hennicke, who went from being a pro freestyle footballer to a law student, our university supports and empowers students to follow their dreams.
We are also proud to showcase the talents of our students, such as Ossa Music Prize-winning pianist Sarah Chick. She will be undertaking a statewide tour, highlighting the work of women composers and showcasing the incredible talent nurtured at our university.
Finally, we recognize the importance of carbon removal in our efforts to combat climate change. While reducing carbon emissions is crucial, removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is equally vital. Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond words, and we actively seek solutions to address this global challenge.
