About the Business
Welcome to Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College, a leading school for girls in the Greater Geelong region. Located on Little Ryrie Street in Geelong, our institution offers a positive and engaging educational experience in a welcoming and supportive community.
With a rich heritage of over 160 years, Matthew Flinders Girls is proud to be a part of the Geelong community. However, we are also known for our innovative teaching methods and forward-thinking programs. In fact, we recently completed an $8.3 million modernization and building project, transforming our learning areas into modern spaces that foster creativity, collaboration, and engagement.
Academic excellence is a key focus at Matthew Flinders Girls, and many of our students have gone on to successful careers as lawyers, scientists, academics, musicians, doctors, teachers, and researchers. We also celebrate the applied learning paths that our students take through our partnership with The Gordon, Geelong's award-winning TAFE institution.
At Matthew Flinders Girls, we pride ourselves on being a community for all. We are non-denominational, inclusive, and create an environment that gives every girl an equal opportunity. Unlike other schools, we are the only government girls school outside of Melbourne, and we are not limited by school zoning.
We welcome Grade 6 girls from all primary schools in the Greater Geelong region, including government, independent, and Catholic schools, to apply for a place in Year 7. Applications for 2024 enrollment open in Week 1 of Term 2 in your Grade 6 year. To learn more about the application process and timings, click the learn more button below.
Matthew Flinders Girls is a member of The Academy of Accredited SEAL Schools and offers the accredited Select Entry Advanced Learning Program in Years 7-8. Our program incorporates Positive Psychology, encouraging altruism, risk-taking, gratitude, and resilience. Students will also learn visual thinking routines, engage in tasks that encourage deeper understanding, and foster a growth mindset of continuous learning and effort.
To gain entry into our SEAL program, students must demonstrate curiosity, a passion for learning, and a willingness to support their peers. They must also be involved in co-curricular activities outside of school, complete an examination, and undergo an interview.
Here at Matthew Flinders Girls, we create unique, supportive, and community-minded learning environments. We celebrate individuality and challenge each student to reach their full potential.
Our central location provides easy access to Geelong's vibrant cultural precinct, excellent sporting facilities, and the world-class sailing and outdoor amenities at the iconic waterfront.
We are well-known for our exceptional music program, and our school band, The Sweethearts, has received accolades worldwide. Our extra-curricular programs offer a wide range of opportunities in sports, sister-school exchanges, performing arts, and student leadership.
Join us at Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College and be a part of a school that values education, supports personal growth, and prepares girls for a successful future.

Reviews
"I'm hoping I can give a more useful review that will be taken seriously by other adults when considering sending their child here, as a former student who is now 26 years old. I am not aware if all of the staff are the same as it has been a few years, but I know at least half would still be there minimum, as they have a low staff turnover rate. I had a handful of kind teachers and the rest actively bullied me and made me feel stupid. One example that comes to mind is that I had to argue with the science teacher as a 12 year old girl because she didn't understand the imperial and metric system; She shamed me in front of the entire class when I was the only one who was right. For clarifcation; She had the class use Australian measuring cups for an American copy of a kids science experiment with imperial measurements. I was the only one to catch it; and because of this my science experiment was the only one to work. When I told her why mine worked and nobody elses did, she berated me for not following instructions instead as to not look weak in front of other students; instead of praising me for catching the mistake and adjusting for it on the fly. She refused to acknowledge her own mistake and that they were American measurements and made me look stupid to all of the other kids. Another example would be when my English teacher corrected me for using the word kin instead of king, and didn't know that kin meant family and that I was not trying to say king in a sentence. When I told her that her correction was wrong and that I meant kin; she told me the word didn't exist in front of everyone and they laughed at me. I was actively shut down and stopped from growing because I knew words and things other kids my age didn't and they actively stifled my growth. If I struggled with a project they'd assume I was lazy and would punish me even when I'd break down crying asking for help. I also was wrongfully accused of bullying a girl and was interrogated for hours by a staff member who kept asking me if I knew why I was there and to come clean; when I genuinely didn't know and this made me progressively more upset and anxious as I just wanted to know why I was in her office so I could cooperate with her. I'd send your daughter to a more supportive and kind environment. I hope a review from an adult somehwat sadly looking back on their time here will help you make the right decision over the reviews of children mad about uniform policies :p"
"good school hashbrowns and dino nugs slap"
"this school is not good they care more about there socks and if your wearing a long sleeve top you get a detention. the school cares more about uniform than supporting kids when I went for the tour and orientation they made the school seem really fun and really good so I chose this school but after a week of being here at the school they really showed there true colours now the school feels like jail every time you step into it so yes the school seems like a great school when you go on the tours and information nights but i'm telling you now to not go here and if you decide to move here move before its to late."
"this school is so bad i got bullied for a year and they did nothing i hate it here and about to move schools istg. i want my school to see this bc they deserve to know the things they do. they do nothing about bullying, and only care about uniform. i once had my school sport pants on and a random t-shirt and they said "you have to have some kind of uniform on" like i have school pants. chill. i hate it and i hope the girls and my school see this too. you know who you are."
