About Runnymede - National Trust Tasmania
Welcome to Runnymede - National Trust Tasmania, a captivating establishment and museum located at 61 Bay Road in New Town, Australia. This beautifully preserved 1840 whaling captain's house and gardens is just an 8-minute drive from central Hobart.
At Runnymede, you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich history of Captain Charles Bayley and his family, who called this place home for over 100 years. The house showcases a remarkable collection of maritime artifacts, highlighting the Captain's seafaring adventures. The property is named after the Captain's favorite ship, Runnymede, and now serves as a platform for promoting marine conservation.
Originally built for Robert Pitcairn, one of the first lawyers admitted to the Supreme Court of Van Diemen's Land and a prominent campaigner against convict transportation, Runnymede also holds historic artworks and possessions of Francis Nixon, Tasmania's first Anglican bishop.
To fully explore the wonders of this lovely homestead, we invite you to join one of our knowledgeable volunteers on the Captain's House Tour. This 45-minute guided tour will provide you with insights into the fascinating history and stories behind Runnymede. Afterward, take a leisurely stroll through the beautiful heritage gardens, meticulously maintained and filled with flowering shrubs, fruit trees, heritage roses, and hedges.
In addition to regular tours, Runnymede is available for private events such as weddings, conference cocktails, and corporate dinners. The venue can accommodate up to 50 guests in the drawing room or up to 150 guests in a marquee set up in the historic gardens. Our dedicated staff will ensure that your event runs brilliantly, offering add-on tours and theater experiences to enhance the occasion.
For school groups, we offer one-hour tours that provide students with a glimpse into the social and cultural traditions of the 19th century, the role of servants, and the workings of a self-sufficient estate.
Runnymede is closed during July and August for essential housekeeping and collection work. However, throughout the year, we host a variety of special events, including annual High Teas and the Spring and Autumn Plant Sales.
Admission prices are as follows: Adult $15, Concession $12, Child aged 7-16 yrs $5, National Trust Members & children 6 yrs and under FREE.
Come and experience the tranquility and beauty of this marvelous 120-year-old garden during our one-hour garden tour. Accompanied by one of our dedicated National Trust volunteers, you will be guided through the grounds, learning about the various plant species and their historical significance.
Runnymede has been owned by three families, starting with the Pitcairn family in 1840, followed by Francis Russell Nixon, Tasmania's first Anglican bishop, and his wife Anna Nixon. Several generations of the Bayley and Bayly Family have also called Runnymede their home.
We invite you to explore the house and gardens with our informative guided tours, where you will gain a deeper understanding of the fascinating history and heritage of this remarkable place.

"Very well preserved historic house. Guides are well informed, can tell interesting points. Lots of interesting artefacts. Worth the visit"
"The 2 National Trust of Australia Hobart properties have been highlights of my trip to Tasmania. The guide at Runnymede House had an amazing knowledge of the history of the property and the families that had lived in the property. I had a similar experience at the Hobart Convict Penitentiary. The National Trust of Australia is very lucky to have such enthusiastic, knowledgeable volunteers who give excellent presentations."
"A fantastic tour around the house with guide ‘Clare’ on a rainy day. She was friendly and knowledgeable. We really loved the house. A hidden Hobart gem! Thanks"
