His dedication to his field is evident through his numerous national and international awards and scholarships, including the prestigious Tony Broe award in Geriatric Medicine (ANZSGM, 2014), IMSANZ advanced trainee travelling scholarship (2013), and the American Academy of Dermatology World Congress Fund travel fellowship (2008).

Dr Gunathilake's commitment to research is evident through his strong research background, which includes working as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California San Francisco between 2007 and 2009. He has also published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, contributing to the advancement of geriatric medicine.
