About Wollotuka Institute
Welcome to the Wollotuka Institute, a prominent establishment located at Callaghan, Ring Road in Australia. As an institution dedicated to Indigenous education, our name "Wollotuka" holds great significance as it translates to "eating and meeting place" in the language of the Awabakal people.
At the Wollotuka Institute, we are committed to advancing Indigenous education not only locally, but also on a national and global scale. Our experienced staff is here to support you in all aspects of your academic journey, as well as your cultural and emotional well-being, ensuring your success during your time at the University of Newcastle.
Above all, we strive to provide an inclusive and culturally safe environment where you can find support, advice, collaboration, and knowledge-sharing. Our institute serves as a space where you can connect with fellow students and the community, creating a home away from home while studying at the University of Newcastle.
We offer a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and research degrees, opening up exciting career opportunities for you to explore. Additionally, our Yapug pathway program is specifically designed to empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, equipping them with the necessary skills to succeed at university.
The Wollotuka Institute is guided by the wisdom and teachings of our Nguraki, or Elders and cultural mentors, whose knowledge is deeply respected and honored. Their invaluable input has shaped a locally defined set of Cultural Standards that reflect and embrace the essence of our culture.
As an institution, we are proud to be a part of the World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium (WINHEC), which aims to unite professionals in achieving common goals through higher education. This global connection allows us to collaborate and learn from Indigenous communities worldwide.
Our functions encompass a wide range of support services, including scholarships, tutorial assistance, employment opportunities, and overall guidance throughout your student journey. Our experienced staff, Elders, and cultural leaders are always here to provide the necessary support and resources you may need.
The Umilliko Indigenous Higher Education Research Centre, our research arm, is deeply rooted in Indigenous-centered ideals. With a strong research philosophy, we strive to contribute to the advancement of Indigenous knowledge and understanding.
Our dedicated student advancement team is available to offer proactive support throughout your studies. Whether you need assistance with program selection, course advice, scholarships, or university support services, we are here to guide you every step of the way.
The Wollotuka Institute highly values its connections with local, national, and international communities. We actively engage with schools and communities in our region, inspiring and encouraging our people to realize that attending university is an achievable goal.
Additionally, our Maligagu Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment Strategy and Action Plan 2020-2025 focuses on attracting highly qualified applicants for academic and professional positions across the University. We are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce.
We would like to acknowledge and pay respect to the traditional Aboriginal owners of the lands within our footprint areas, including the Awabakal Nation, Darkinjung Nation, Biripai Nation, Worimi Nation, Wonnarua Nation, and Eora Nation. We also honor the wisdom of our Elders, both past and present.
Lastly, if you are visiting our website from China, we invite you to explore our dedicated page with all the information you need for studying at the University of Newcastle.
