Animal Referral & Emergency Centre
About the Business
Welcome to the Animal Referral & Emergency Centre (AREC) located in Broadmeadow, Australia. As a leading institution in veterinary care, we provide specialist, referral, and emergency healthcare for pets in Newcastle, Maitland, and the Hunter region.
Since our establishment in 2004, we have been dedicated to delivering 24/7 emergency care for pets, ensuring that they receive the highest level of medical attention at all times. With a team of over 100 qualified staff members, our purpose-built facilities are equipped to provide holistic medical care to over 10,000 pets and their humans each year.
We understand that when you bring your beloved pet to us, you may be feeling upset, confused, and anxious. Our compassionate team is here to guide you through the process, offering support and helping you make the right decisions for your furry friend.
Rest assured that our after-hours emergency care services are available when your pet needs it most. With access to specialist medical advice and treatment options, you can have peace of mind knowing that your fur-baby is in capable hands.
Let us share with you a real-life example of how AREC saved a pet's life. Kevin's owners noticed that he was becoming lethargic, off his food, and experiencing a mild nosebleed. They immediately brought him to AREC, where a blood test confirmed that he was suffering from rodenticide toxicity from ingesting rat bait, which can be fatal. Thanks to our emergency veterinarian, Dr. Liz Napier, Kevin received the necessary treatment and made a full recovery.
In addition to emergency care, we also provide specialist services during the daytime and overnight. Whether your pet requires ongoing after-hours care or specialized treatment, our highly trained staff are equipped to handle any situation that pet care demands.
At AREC, we prioritize the health and well-being of your pets above all else. We believe in providing high-quality care and continuously educating pet owners about potential risks. Our website offers valuable information on various topics, such as symptoms of paralysis ticks, dangers of certain foods like chocolate and hot cross buns, and tips on keeping your dog (and cat) safe during Easter.
We are proud to serve our community and are committed to ensuring that your pets receive the best possible care. For more information or to book an appointment, please contact us at [contact information].

"I am a pet owner and veterinarian and took our pup in for an emergency. We were seen quickly and had a wonderful experience from beginning to end with a very caring and hardworking team. Given the veterinarian and veterinary staff shortages in the nation, we were so thankful they could help our boy in a speedy and efficient manner. I even got photo updates of our boy once he was settled in at the hospital. I could not speak more highly of the entire team, from the client services representatives to nurses and doctors - everything went as smoothly as possible and we are so grateful!!! Estimate was also spot on and lower than I expected. Highly recommend!!!"
"Had to rush out little Pomeranian Milo into the vets on a very busy Saturday night as he wasn’t breathing properly and showed signs of strange behaviour. We were greeted and Milo was rushed out the back. It wasn’t long when he was returned to us by a triage nurse stating all his vitals signs were perfect. We opted to monitor him at home as the was a long wait to be seen and i felt I was maybe overreacting. Milo is perfectly ok but some people weren’t lucky to be able to take their furbabies home with them. The team were so kind, compassionate and very informative. I hasn’t heard many good reviews but I couldn’t fault them at all. Just beautiful people doing an extremely hard job. Thank you team at AREVets."
"I have had two unfortunate experiences in the last several weeks where I have had to bring my staffy Tinka in for treatment. However, the staff at this clinic were absolutely phenomenal in both circumstances - from the kind nurses/admin staff at the front desk, to the vets who continually went above and beyond in treating our dog. In both cases, I have been very very lucky to have been able to bring Tinka home thanks to their brilliant care and treatment, and they kept my family well informed of Tinka’s condition during both of her stays. I am so very thankful to every single member who were involved in Tinka’s rehabilitation and I could not recommend this clinic highly enough!"
"I am thankful for all staff whilst my Luna was in AREC care. A special thank you to Elizabeth Napier who was Lunas first point of contact when entering AREC. In regards to communication - unmatched. All staff rostered on at the times Luna was admitted in AREC care I was made sure we understood everything that was happening step by step to keep myself and partner up to date. Sadly my beloved Luna girl did not make it out of emergency and passed on Wednesday 14 June. I thank all staff at AREC for the amazing care and support during one of the hardest times of my life. ❤️ Luna was so loved and I am grateful for the care during sadly her last moments here with us."
"AREC saved this dog’s life. No question. I was referred by my local vet and drove my (mother’s) dog 4 hours to Broadmeadow. She was in progressed keto acidosis and I arrived at 3.30am. The staff were so lovely and compassionate and did absolutely everything they could to allay my concerns. She was in hospital for four days and phoned twice a day with updates as part of their service. Is it expensive? Sure. Healthcare, surgical and other staff wages when not subsidised are very expensive. Right from the start however they gave me a quoted ceiling cost and then would always check back in during one of the phone call updates if they thought there was a chance the quote could go higher. They left it in my hands the entire time and it allowed my mother and I to weigh up the cost. Ultimately, this was her best friend and we agreed to it and she now has a happy dog living with diabetes, all thanks to the incredible efforts of the AREC team in saving her life and getting her stabilised."
