Reviews of Saara Sips
"Dom the barista made great coffee, smelled like the beans were really fresh & the flavours complex, not overcooked. I had purple avocado meal, but I was also tempted by the almond croissant & authentic-looking Florentines. I came for brunch, but I saw a well stocked bar so I'm planning to return for cocktails & dinner with friends."
"Hip restaurant on buzzy Darby Street. The menu is international and eclectic, but possibly in trying to offer something for everyone they have managed to offer minimal choice for most people (three people in our group of four ordered the same dish - pork belly). The did was okay, but far from being perfectly executed. The pork belly was fatty and the skin well short of cracking. There seems to be a big focus on drinks, with lots of people seeming to drop in for cocktails. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. Parking was difficult."
"With a more limited palette of acceptable flavours, breakfast can be a harder meal to innovate. Wil&Sons—which came as a reader recommendation—don’t seem to struggle. From a one-page menu they produced two well-balanced breakfast dishes I haven’t tried before. The belly Benedict ($26) updated the original with a slice of fried pork, miso hollandaise, Asian greens, pickled cucumber, a fried egg, sourdough and a chilli sauce that was satisfyingly spicy. Served on brioche for a modicum of sweetness, spiced scrambled eggs ($23) teamed an equally exciting chilli jam, tzatziki and zaatar under a handful of crisp kale leaves. Coffee, roasted by Little Street Roasters in Forster, was good across a strong flat white and a strong latte. With lunch and dinner also looking exciting, this eclectic Darby Street venue is well worth keeping in mind if you happen to find yourself in Newcastle."
"Best meal we have had in Newy for years. My wife and I had dinner on a Saturday night, it was busy but the service and speed was not lacking. Staff were very attentive and friendly. Beer range was great, we didn't try any cocktails but they looked great. I had the pork belly which was cooked to perfection, flavours on the plate blended perfectly. My wife had the pasta which was just as good. Really looking forward to coming back and trying their new menu."
"This was hands down one of the best places we've been to eat whilst visiting Newcastle, we love to try new places on our many stays and Wil & Sons will definitely be a must visit every time for us! We had a reservation and unfortunately got held up, but the lovely staff member who answered the phone was so bubbly and understanding and more than welcoming when we arrived shortly after our due time - this was greatly appreciated after a massive 12hr+ day for us. We ordered within a few minutes of settling in choosing cocktails and an assortment of entrees and sides staff were more than happy to accommodate an extra piece for a dish to even out portions. All of the meals and drinks arrived in outstanding time and beautifully presented, they almost looked too good to eat. Safe to say we were not disappointed in our choices and thoroughly enjoyed the meal. We were lucky enough to try a dessert special of a deconstructed apple crumble and followed by another cocktail the Jim Jam recommended by one of the very attentive staff Jaz. Words really can't give our experience the credit they deserve from the atmosphere, staff and the food I was so pleased we had the pleasure to dine here and will continue to do so and looking forward to trying some of the other menu offerings!"
