Pirralilla Estate
About the Business
Welcome to Pirralilla Estate, a historic establishment located in Aldgate, Australia. This charming lodging and point of interest holds a rich history that dates back to 1902 when it was built as a summer residence for Michael and Bessie Hawker. Seeking respite from the dry heat of their sprawling sheep stations, the Hawkers created Pirralilla as a retreat where they could entertain and socialize with other notable Adelaideans.
In 1950, Pirralilla Estate was sold to The Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart, the order founded by Saint Mary MacKillop. For several decades, the property served as a boarding school for young girls training to become nuns. On Sundays, services were open to the public, while the rest of the week was dedicated to the silent order. As the popularity of the Catholic Church declined and fewer girls sought to become nuns, St Joseph's Aldgate transformed into a conference and retreat center.
In 2009, George and Esme Savva fulfilled their dream of making Pirralilla Estate their home in the Adelaide Hills. With love and dedication, they have renovated, restored, and reinvigorated this majestic property, ensuring that its historical significance is preserved. Now, they warmly invite you to experience the beauty and charm of Pirralilla Estate.
Conveniently located just 20 minutes from the Adelaide CBD and 40 minutes from Adelaide Airport, Pirralilla Estate offers a tranquil escape from the bustling city. The picturesque town of Hahndorf is a short 10-minute drive away, while the renowned wine regions of Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale are within easy reach at just an hour's drive.
Whether you are seeking a relaxing retreat, a venue for a conference or event, or simply a glimpse into the past, Pirralilla Estate offers an unforgettable experience. Come and immerse yourself in the history, beauty, and hospitality of this remarkable institution.

"Excellent accommodation and Esme is the perfect host."
"Highly recommend for a peaceful escape. My partner and I booked the gardeners cottage for two nights and despite it being so cold outside, Esme made sure the heat was pumping inside (including electric blankets!) so cosy! The space is much bigger than you think, great decor, superbly clean/setup and a very comfortable bed. Breakfast is also included and potentially our trips highlight - Esme had made homemade scones for my partner and got me gluten free bread!! Around the cottage there are plenty of trails for running or hiking, close to vineyards and close to FRED eatery for a delicious brunch."
"We had a booking to stay with the estate, unfortunately my husband tested positive for Covid on the day. Its disappointing that the accommodation weren't willing to be flexible to reschedule us given how expensive the stay is. I understand it was short notice, but given the pandemic we are in, I would have thought they would be more flexible, otherwise who would want to be spending this much money only for it to wasted? Unlikely to get tourism this way. I am not sure if we will book with this place again."
"The caretakers cottage is a beautiful place to stay. We loved looking out at the forest while laying in bed of a morning. The place is well done up and modern inside and decorated beautifully. We loved the bonus touches they have provided, such as scones on arrival, bathrobes and slippers, and marshmallows so we could toast them in the bonfire. We really enjoyed our stay in such a gorgeous location."
"We really enjoyed the beautiful surroundings and comfortable accommodation. Esme had thought of everything even electric blankets and efficient air-conditioning. Scones with cream and jam were a real treat on our arrival."
