Dickson Wetland
About the Business
Welcome to Dickson Wetland, located in Dutton Street, Dickson, Australia. This establishment is not just a park or a point of interest, but also a testament to the commitment of the Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate - Environment in creating a sustainable and eco-friendly environment.
The Dickson Wetland is part of a larger initiative to construct wetlands in the Sullivan's Creek Catchment. These wetlands serve as a vital ecosystem, providing a home for various wildlife species and contributing to the overall health of the surrounding area.
Visitors to the Dickson Wetland will be delighted to find a range of amenities and features that make this a truly enjoyable experience. From seating areas to informal play areas, viewing spots, pedestrian paths, and even artwork, there is something for everyone to enjoy. The wetland is also surrounded by a variety of locally occurring plants, creating a lush and vibrant landscape.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the Dickson Wetland is its sustainable water management system. Excess stormwater is piped to the nearby Dickson Playing Fields and stored in tanks on site. This water is then used to replace the use of potable water, helping the ACT Government achieve its water reduction targets.
The Dickson Wetland also has a strong community focus. Local schools have been involved in the design and creation of tile mosaics that reflect the wetlands. These beautiful mosaics can be seen throughout the paving at the wetland, showcasing the talent and creativity of the students.
Wildlife enthusiasts will be thrilled to know that the wetland is home to various species, including maned wood ducks and black swans. Measures have been taken to protect the plants from these grazers, including the installation of bird netting and tree guards. Additionally, frogs have quickly colonized the wetlands, adding to the biodiversity of the area.
Community involvement is also a key aspect of the Dickson Wetland. Over 200 people attended a Community Planting Day, where they planted macrophytes, native grasses, and trees, and installed tree guards to protect the plants. The event was followed by a barbecue, where volunteers enjoyed delicious organic sausages.
The Dickson Wetland is not just a beautiful and serene location, but also a place of education. Year 1 and 2 students from North Ainslie School were the first members of the public to view the wetland, allowing them to learn about the importance of wetlands and the role they play in our environment.
In addition to the Dickson Wetland, the Lyneham wetland is another remarkable feature of the Sullivan's Creek Catchment. Opened to the public in April 2012, it boasts a diverse range of plant species and has also been the site of a Community Planting Day, where volunteers planted 1200 native grasses and shrubs.
Whether you are a nature lover, a community enthusiast, or simply looking for a peaceful retreat, the Dickson Wetland is the perfect destination for you. Come and explore this beautiful and sustainable oasis in the heart of Australia.
