About the Business
Welcome to the Woden Floods Memorial, a serene and contemplative establishment located at Service Street, Curtin, Australia. This memorial is dedicated to the memory of seven young people, including four children, who tragically lost their lives in the devastating Woden Floods on Australia Day in 1971.
The Woden Valley was struck by a severe and sudden thunderstorm on the night of Tuesday, January 26th. In the midst of torrential rain and flash flooding, seven lives were tragically taken. In honor of their memory, this memorial was created through extensive consultation with the families of the victims and the wider Canberra community.
Designed by Neil Hobbs of Harris Hobbs Landscapes, the four-meter-high standing stone is a striking feature of the memorial. It showcases the ACT floral emblem, the Royal Blue Bell, also known as Wahlenbergia gloriosa. Engravings of the victim's names adorn the stone, serving as a poignant reminder of their lives. Additionally, a smaller stone displays a map of the site as it was in 1971, allowing visitors to reflect on the tragedy that occurred.
Surrounding the memorial, seven black cypress pines have been planted, serving as markers of the location. These trees, along with the natural and carved stones, create a peaceful atmosphere for visitors to pay their respects. A pathway, seating, and thoughtfully chosen plantings further enhance the tranquility of this space.
The memorial was officially launched on January 26th, 2010, by Chief Minister Jon Stanhope, MLA, and dedicated by Bishop Pat Power. It stands as a poignant reminder of the lives lost and a place for reflection and remembrance.
We invite you to visit the Woden Floods Memorial, a place where the past is commemorated and the future is embraced.
Reviews
"A memorial for those who lost their life in the floods."
"It's a nice place to sit down, that's pretty much it. It's next to Dry St as well which is pretty cool lmao."
"Nice place to have a picnic"
"It is a good relaxing place but needs a water tap."
"Lived in Woden for years, never knew it existed, wrong side of the round about I guess. Seems nice enough though, wish it got more cyclists off the roads and onto these lovely paths."
