St. Matthew's Primary School

Welcome to St. Matthew's Primary School, a renowned establishment located at 12 Stutchbury Street, Page, Australia. As a point of interest and a primary school, we have been providing quality education to students from Kindergarten to Year Six since our establishment in January 1972.

Our school was initially opened with an enrolment of 360 children and twelve dedicated staff members. In response to a request from the then Archbishop of Canberra Goulburn, Archbishop Cahill, the Sisters of St Joseph took charge of the school, with Sister Leo Ryan becoming the Foundation Principal. We are forever grateful to the Sisters of St Joseph for their tireless efforts in establishing and nurturing the growth of Catholic Education at St. Matthew's.

In 1988, we appointed our first lay Principal, marking a significant milestone in our school's history. By 1989, our teaching staff became entirely composed of lay teachers. However, we continue to honor the Sisters of St Joseph and their invaluable contribution to our school by displaying a plaque commemorating their role in our establishment in our foyer.

Over the years, St. Matthew's Primary School has seen fluctuations in enrolment. In 1977, our enrolment reached its peak with 912 students. Currently, we have approximately 340 students, primarily from the surrounding suburbs of Hawker, Weetangera, Page, and Scullin. We also welcome students from as far away as Hall, Murrumbateman, Yass, and Wamboin.

At St. Matthew's, we believe that education is more than just academic learning. It is about fostering a sense of community and developing a strong moral compass. Our mission is to help students know Jesus as a friend, someone who cares not only about them but also about the person sitting next to them and all people, both within our school and beyond.
