About AVV Calisthenics Club
Welcome to AVV Calisthenics Club, a premier calisthenics establishment with over 50 years of rich history. Located in Adelaide, South Australia, our club is dedicated to nurturing, inspiring, and empowering our members to reach their full potential while fostering lifelong friendships and having fun along the way.
At AVV Calisthenics Club, our coaches bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the table. They have competed in the sport for decades, many at the elite level, before completing their coaching qualifications. One of the most rewarding aspects of coaching for them is witnessing the joy and confidence of their girls as they showcase their skills on stage.
As a committee-run club, AVV Calisthenics Club provides a family-oriented environment where all members are valued and respected. We are always excited to welcome new members and their families, starting from the age of 2.
But what exactly is calisthenics? The word "calisthenics" is derived from the Greek words "kalós" meaning beautiful and "sthenos" meaning strength. It dates back to ancient times when the Greeks developed a superior training method for their military. These exercises, performed solely with an individual's own body weight as resistance, aimed to develop strength, endurance, flexibility, and coordination.
While calisthenics training has evolved over time, competitive calisthenics is a sport unique to Australia. Originating in Victoria during the Gold Rush, it was initially known as Physical Culture and was practiced by Victorians to maintain suppleness. In the 1930s, the sport expanded to Victorian state schools, firmly establishing its place in Australian sports culture.
Today, there are over 100 calisthenics clubs and 15,000 participants across Australia. While the core fundamentals of strength, flexibility, and control remain unchanged, they are now complemented by attributes such as deportment, grace, poise, discipline, and expression.
Calisthenics combines dance, marching, singing, and acting, all choreographed to music. The competitive season is highly anticipated, with competitors dressed in stunning costumes, delighting their audience with their technique, expression, and confident execution.
To experience the energy and vibrancy of AVV Calisthenics Club, we invite you to register for one of our complimentary come and try classes. No dance experience is required, and these classes are available for participants aged 2 and above.
Join us at AVV Calisthenics Club and discover the friendship, fitness, and fun that our members enjoy. We look forward to sharing our passion for calisthenics with you and helping you unleash your full potential.
