About Economic Garden
Welcome to the Economic Garden, located in the heart of Adelaide, South Australia. Situated within the Adelaide City Council, this establishment is not just a park, but also a point of interest that will captivate your senses.
As you stroll through the garden, you will be greeted by the breathtaking sight of the heritage-listed Goodman Building. This historic structure, formerly the base for the Municipal Tramways Trust, now serves as the administration building for the Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium. It stands as a testament to the rich history and culture of the area.
But there is more to the Economic Garden than its architectural beauty. We are proud to be a part of the global movement to protect and restore our blue planet. Every year, on 8th June, we join the world in celebrating World Ocean Day. This annual event unites people from all walks of life, rallying them together to safeguard and preserve our precious ocean ecosystems.
In our latest blog, State Herbarium's Jem Barratt takes you on a deep dive into the scientific work conducted at the Economic Garden. With a focus on seagrasses and seaweed, our dedicated team contributes to the restoration and preservation of our ocean ecosystems. Their research and efforts play a crucial role in understanding and mitigating the challenges faced by our marine environment.
Whether you are a nature enthusiast, a history buff, or simply seeking a serene escape from the bustling city, the Economic Garden offers a unique experience. Immerse yourself in the beauty of the surroundings, learn about the fascinating history of the Goodman Building, and gain insights into the important work being done to protect our oceans.
We invite you to visit the Economic Garden and discover the wonders it holds. Take a leisurely stroll, have a picnic amidst the lush greenery, or simply find a quiet spot to reflect. The Economic Garden is not just a place, but an experience that will leave you with a newfound appreciation for the natural world and its preservation.
Reviews of Economic Garden
"Lovely spaces, well maintained. The gardeners here are fantastic, one answered lots of my questions about the medicinal garden and plants and he was very knowledgeable. Thanks Nik!"
"Lovely garden"
"Nice distance from Adelaide uni for when U want to wander off and have a cry in nature between lectures"
"Nice wide open space with lots of plants and a central fountain. The fountain doesn’t flow very quickly like the one in Rundle mall though. When I went, there wasn’t many plants there. I would definitely recommend for people to go in summer though as looks much better. There are a couple benches set up around the edges of the garden. The garden is accessible directly from the palm house, the garden of health and Murdoch avenue."
"Visited with a horde of school children and they loved the place. Found it to be very relaxing and a lot of fun."
