Reviews of Christies Beach High & Southern Vocational College
"the school is set out quite well with break out spaces and chill out spots, but as said by many staff these spaces aren't allowed to be used because leadership said so. one of my friends got accused of saying something inappropriate to another student, he got pulled into a room with the deputy principal. The deputy principal said to my this student "your not leaving this room until you tell the truth." now, my friend attempted to tell the truth but instantly got shut down by the deputy principal for apparently lying. The moral of the story being that leadership don't let you have a say even though one of our human rights is a right to be treated fairly. no matter how much respect or kindness you show to leadership they treat u like nothing, they talk down to you and show absolute no respect for you. a lot of the changes in the school are made by leadership. no students have an input into any changes or decisions made. The wellbeing team are amazing though, they understand students and have comfortable and safe bonds with them. a youth worker said to me once, "us youth workers are constantly putting out fires between leadership and students" and that says a lot. This school deals with behavior with just suspensions and take homes, no rehabilitation program or any support."
"I'll be perfectly candid: I'm currently a student attending this school (I know, "oh god, another student review," but hear me out). The school recently renovated one of the buildings, moving the library and science laboratories into the space, setting it up as the hub for Year 11 (and some Year 10) classes. Sounds good, right? Well it would be, if not for the... "interesting" decisions made by certain members of leadership. For starters, students aren't allowed in the building during breaks. Not in the library nor the study spaces, just not allowed in the building. Initially this was framed as a COVID thing, but as time has progressed it's been regarded as "a decision from leadership" by many staff. This wouldn't be too bad IF there was enough seating to cater for all of the students in the school (which there is not nearly enough). Where are we supposed to sit and eat? Where are we supposed to go to get away from the horde outside? Additionally, we're not allowed to use the study spaces unless directly supervised, which does not work with a cohort of our size and the space in the building. So we're not allowed to use the multi-million dollar building aside from the classrooms? Seems redundant. To go beyond the issues that have arisen in the past weeks: 1) UNIFORM Years ago, when the current uniform was being introduced and integrated, a group of Year 11/12 students went to our principal to discuss issues regarding the uniform. The uniform is transparent in the chest region, the shorts ride up naturally, the pants are loose in the waistband yet tight around the thighs and the butt. In short, they're visually revealing in too many ways to be coincidental (and of course all of them reported feeling brushed off, and no changes were made to the uniform in the following years). A survey was released to students last year regarding the uniform and nobody I know had anything good to say about the uniform, yet we haven't heard anything about it since. 2) STUDENT CONNECTION I can't recall a time I've seen the principal have a genuine conversation with a student beyond the Year 12s in my years at the school. I doubt he knows my name. I doubt he knows my friends names. Yet people wonder why many students have said that they feel as if they're just a number. 3) CONDESCENDING AND DISMISSIVE A friend of mine had a meeting with a member of the leadership team regarding some concerns they had with the school last year. These concerns were basically brushed aside, they were then spoken down to in a condescending matter (queue the "I'm sorry it appeared that way, I was just trying to have a conversation" speech), and then the governing council was told that the member of the leadership team had spoken to the students regarding concerns they were having and explained the situation to them, where in reality he told that acquaintance, and then they informed students. 4) TRANSPARENCY AND COMMUNICATION I have been told countless times over the years that leadership is working on transparency between staff and students, yet nothing has changed. We hear about things when they're dropped on our heads. Our opinion is not asked for or listened to if its given without asking. We had a change in our timetable that nobody I know agreed with or has yet to agree with, and certain students asked if we were allowed to protest this, and the answer was yes. But when people tried to combat the change, they were threatened with consequences. 5) Ew... A friend of mine was wearing a jumper under his shirt, and the principal told him to take it off and he said he would and tried to leave to do that. He was then accused of arguing and told that he wasn't going anywhere until he took it off (so getting undressed in front of the principal?) I'm sure it was just a lapse in judgement and wording but still: ew... Every time I mention leadership issues to staff, they give a look of agreeance but cannot say anything critical for fear of their job security. Most of the teachers are good though. There is more but I'm fast approaching the character limit."
"10/10 place to cry in the toilets, my friends and i enjoy but there are many watchful eyes. aka the spiders. anyways good crying place ig."
