About Flensing Deck
Welcome to Flensing Deck, located at Queensland's beautiful Moreton Island in Brisbane City. As an establishment and point of interest, Flensing Deck is a must-visit tourist attraction for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
Did you know that Flensing Deck was once a bustling whaling station during the 1950s? Back then, Tangalooma, on Moreton Island, was chosen as the site for the largest land-based whaling station in the southern hemisphere. The Australian Company Whale Products Pty Ltd was formed in 1950, and the first two humpback whales were harpooned in 1952. In that same year, the whaling program had already reached its yearly quota of 600 whales, with the season lasting only 124 days.
The whaling station's main focus was extracting oil from the whales, as one whale could yield more than 8000 kilograms of this valuable resource. The oil was then used to make margarine, glycerine, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. The meat was either used for pet food or consumed overseas, while the bones, offal, and low-grade meat were turned into meal for livestock or fertilizers.
However, by the late 1950s, the introduction of vegetable oil and falling whale oil prices led to a decline in the whaling industry. In 1961, the whales became scarce, and light planes were used to spot them from the air. By August 1962, with only 68 whales caught, the whaling station closed its doors.
Unfortunately, during its ten years of operation, the whaling program had a devastating impact on the humpback whale population. Over 6,000 humpback whales and one blue whale were killed and processed, leading to a significant decline in their numbers. The east coast's humpback whale population went from an estimated 15,000 to less than 500.
In 1963, the Tangalooma Whaling Station was sold to a group of Gold Coast businessmen, and in 1980, the resort was acquired by the Osborne family, who still own and operate it today. As a result of the whaling program's consequences, humpback whales were placed on the Protected Species list in 1965.
The Flensing Deck stands as a poignant reminder of the consequences of overhunting wildlife. Though it once witnessed the tragic whaling operations, it now serves as a shelter for resort activities such as basketball and handball. This transformation showcases the remarkable change that can occur over time.
Today, Tangalooma Island Resort is still owned and operated by the Osborne family, with Brian and Betty, along with their sons Jeff and Glenn, at the helm. The irony is not lost on anyone that Tangalooma, once a whaling station, is now one of Queensland's largest Whale Watching operators. From June to October each year, the resort offers daily whale watching cruises, and in 2017 alone, over 1200 whales were sighted. It truly is a testament to how attitudes towards wildlife conservation can shift and the importance of preserving our natural treasures.
Come and experience the rich history and breathtaking beauty of Flensing Deck at Tangalooma Island Resort. Explore the remnants of the whaling era and witness the incredible journey of the humpback whales as they migrate along the coast. It's a place where the past and present intertwine, reminding us of the importance of protecting our marine life for future generations.

Reviews of Flensing Deck
"This is the Fleming Deck where they used to haul up the dead whales onto the roof, cutting them up and boiling their flesh to get their whale oil."
"Wow. Amazing sunset from the deck and little curlews paying us a visit."
"This guy visited us every afternoon. View great."
"During our stay at Tangalooma, this landmark was a common meeting place for our group. We speculated that it looked like an old dining complex (the supporting posts have a ballroom look to them) and there looked like there were holes for air conditioning structures. Then curiosity got the better of me and I did a search. Definitely not a ballroom. Flensing is the process of removing the blubber from whales. This structure was where this happened. The curlew was nesting in the area and was very cranky."
"Thought it was just another old part of the resort left around, until I looked it up. A good reminder for them to leave."
