Reviews of Engine City Imports
"12 months ago I was looking to upgrade the engine in my Cruiser, during that time I chased many wrecking yards, reconditioners and importers for what I wanted. Rupert came recommended to me from a staff member at NPC Performance Clutches and I'm very happy that they did! Straight away I called Rupert and asked the usual questions of ....... How much? (across 3 different engine options) How many km's on the engine? Was it in stock or when would it arrive? After a totally honest response to all of my questions the phone conversation ended with me excited and considering a future project. Of course I Googled Engine City Imports and struggled to picture the long list of negative reviews and compare that with the conversation I had over the phone, it did not make any sense. I had a good gut feeling about this and I'd spoken to many people about the same type of inquire. A few months later Covid hit and I was reluctant to dip into our savings, I took my name off the list for an engine and Rupert was very understanding. Time passed, work continued, the world didn't end...... I got in contact again I put my name down for a 1HD-FT. I could have walked away with a 1HD-T or 1HD-FTE (half cut) but I was prepared to wait for the FT, and wait I did. Yes, it took months for the engine to come in but that was out of both mine and Rupert's control. I followed his request to call mid each month and yes I too offered a deposit but that wasn't accepted. After many phone calls one month apart it finally arrived! I picked it up straight away and fitted it almost immediately. Best upgrade ever! Heaps of power to tow a small van and have the tinny on the Cruiser roof. So after a couple of months having this engine fitted how's it all going?? Well 3 hrs of engine running time I found a major fuel leak from the fuel return rail into the engine oil (symptom.... engine "makes" oil). After removing the rocker cover and fitting a set of return fuel rail washer from a local diesel shop (for $34) the leak was repaired This issue was never brought up with Rupert and I consider it to be one of the hazards with buying a second hand engine! You don't know the KM on the engine, previous maintenance history, ect. You have a written warranty there for major failures (and this was very minor) and clear instructions for items that needs to be replaced (ie thermostat) in order to claim warranty. I would personally recommend replacing timing belt kit, water pump, all hoses, sump and rocker cover gaskets, cam, crank and rear main engine seals and check & adjust valve clearances. I also rekitted the injectors while they were out. My experience with Engine City Imports was great and I'm really happy with everything!"
"Recently purchase 1HDFT engine from Rupert. Allowed my mechanic husband as much time as need to investigate engine, started it up and ran it for us. Rupert and admin provided good old fashioned service on the two occasions we visited the workshop. Face to face would be the best way to communicate with them."
"My issue was the same as Ngolo Kante. I emailed them about placing an order for a 12HT engine, knowing full well they are in high demand. I offered to pay a deposit to ensure I received and engine, I was told it wasn't necessary and 1 would be put aside for me. I was told they were getting stock in in 3 weeks. After 3.5 weeks I heard nothing, so I chased them up. They told me another week due to wharf disputes and bad weather. I waited another week without hearing anything and chased them up again. I was told on a Monday they would be in on Wednesday. Unfortunately their email to me on the Thursday went through to junk and by Tuesday (3 working days) they had already sold it on to another customer. My experience has been horrible client/time organisational skills on their behalf and horrendous customer service in total. Save yourself some time and money and go elsewhere"
"Very poor Business! I've been in contact through email and phone every week for the past 2 months about buying an engine and even offered a deposit (refused to take it) to secure 1 of 5 engines as i know they were limited. When the time came for the engines to land they got delayed 3 weeks so every week i was told "next week" for 3 weeks, and i was made assured that i will be notified when they arrive but i still kept contact as i knew they would forget too (and they did) so luckily for me when i contacted them before the due date i was told of the engines being in the warehouse, they were already in the warehouse! I then asked for a comp test/photos like i was promised and i received just a couple snaps and then a couple hours later was told they sold out to customers who have been wanting them "since yesterday" when i've been in contact about seriously purchasing one for 2 months... Highly do not recommend if you dont want your time wasted. Absolutely poor business and handling of a customers interest in their products."
"BUYERS BEWARE - I purchased an RB25NEO engine from Engine City Imports that was advertised as in ‘Excellent Condition’. Upon dismantling the engine to service it, several issues where found including a damaged compressor wheel, fragments of the compressor wheel scattered through the intake system and rust in one of the cylinders. The manager was contacted and refuses to honour the warranty given, refusing to replace the engine or refund the money paid. Overall a very frustrating and costly experience. Update - the rust found in the cylinders was a result from a blown head gasket leaking watering into the engine. Full rebuild needed. The engine would have never passed a compression test."
