About Bush Knowing Forest School
Welcome to Bush Knowing Forest School, located in Everton Hills, Queensland, in the beautiful Moreton Bay Region of Australia. As an establishment and point of interest, our school has been fostering the future stewards of the earth since 2018.
Led by Joanne Sørensen, Bush Knowing was the first Forest School in North Brisbane and continues to engage and immerse children and their families with the local natural environment. Situated by the picturesque Kedron Brook, we pay our respects to the true custodians of this land, the Turrbal and Jagera people, and honor Elders past, present, and emerging.
At Bush Knowing Forest School, we offer nature immersion and early learning experiences for young children aged 12 months to 8 years. Our Thursday bush kindy group provides a term booked weekly session for children aged 18 months to 6 years and their parents.
Joanne Sørensen, a Level 3 Forest School Leader and an Early Childhood Bachelor-trained Kindergarten Teacher, leads our sessions. She is currently the President of the Australian Forest School Association and has consulted for numerous services to enable them to take children outside to learn.
Our sessions are a mix of exploring the creek and local bush surrounds, complemented by focused sensory and early learning experiences using quality resources. We conclude our time together with music or story time. Our secluded bush space is nestled between Leslie Patrick Park oval and the Kedron Brook, right by the new all abilities playground. Free parking is available for your convenience.
To ensure the safety of all participants, it is compulsory for parents and children to wear closed-toe shoes or gumboots. Please dress appropriately for the weather and bring a hat, shirt with sleeves, sunscreen/insect repellent, or wet weather gear. We also encourage you to bring your own snacks, water, and a rug to enjoy our morning tea area.
We understand the needs of families with young children, and therefore, baby wearing and prams are very welcome at our inclusive environment. However, please be mindful of possible allergies and consume food and drinks only in the designated morning tea area.
For your convenience, a toilet is located by the all abilities playground.
Join us at Bush Knowing Forest School and carve out time in your busy week to spend calm and present moments in nature with your children. We have inspired countless families with our tools for learning, such as nature field guides and binoculars/magnifying glasses. Come and play with us in nature, and together, let's create unforgettable experiences that will shape the future stewards of our earth.

Reviews of Bush Knowing Forest School
"After a bit of a break between visits, how delightful to be back at bush knowing with Jo. The setup is always so beautiful, thoughtfully put together and engaging for my usually very busy two. Thank you Jo, we had the best day and will be back again soon!"
"Jo has created the most beautiful environment for the children to explore and play in nature. My kids have loved the bush kindy sessions and I’m so grateful this beautiful playgroup exists."
"I recently completed the 5 hours Nature Craft and Tools PD workshop run by Jo Sørensen. It has greatly enhanced by knowledge around using tools safely with young children and reinforced the importance of nature play and the learning opportunities for children. It was a very hands on, enjoyable, practical workshop with loads of great ideas that myself and the team at our kindy will be taking back and putting into practice. I highly recommend it and other workshops run by Jo."
"What an exceptional playgroup Jo has created. Such a variety of engaging provocations are spread around a beautiful bush setting, that invoke all senses. The children are fully immersed within nature and are free to explore, take risks and engage in rich learnings about the world around them. Jo has such a wealth of knowledge and pure passion for both our environment and the early years. The children are always so happy to see her smiling face as she spends time chatting, engaging in play, singing and reading stories through each session. What a wonderful experience she is providing for families. Highly highly recommend!!"
"Bush Kindy is by far our sons favourite activity all week. Jo is an absolutely amazing teacher, full of energy and kindness. We are so grateful to have her as our sons first teacher. Every week is themed, providing completely new and unique leaning experiences. Our son also loves that he gets to use real tools, like in activities like woodwork and gardening. Thank you for providing such a special leaning experience."
