About the Business
Welcome to The Commissariat Store Museum, located at 115 William Street in Brisbane City, Australia. As an establishment, museum, point of interest, and tourist attraction, we offer a unique experience that showcases Queensland's rich history.
Our museum is operated by dedicated volunteers from The Royal Historical Society of Queensland. They offer guided tours to provide visitors with a comprehensive understanding of our exhibitions. These exhibitions delve into the convict and colonial history of Queensland, as well as explore the contemporary history of the region.
The highlight of our museum is the building itself. The Commissariat Store is Queensland's oldest habitable structure and holds immense heritage value. The lower two floors were constructed by convicts between 1828 and 1829, while the third floor was added in 1913 and now serves as the main entrance from William Street.
Upon entering the museum, you will be warmly welcomed by our friendly guides. The top floor features rotating exhibitions that highlight various aspects of Queensland's diverse and colorful history. Moving to the middle floor, you will find both rotating and permanent exhibitions that focus on the colonial period in Queensland. Don't miss the infamous 'Convict Finger' on this floor.
The ground floor showcases meticulously crafted models of buildings from Queensland's early colony, arranged in a street layout. Additionally, you can explore the Moreton Bay Panorama and Tom Petrie interactive displays, our latest additions to the museum. Keep an eye out for numbered panels on the ground floor, which represent items from a previous archaeological dig.
As part of our commitment to providing an enriching experience, all visitors are offered complimentary guided tours, subject to staff availability. Our guides are well-versed in the building's features, colonial history, and the exhibitions on display, and are eager to answer any questions you may have.
The Commissariat Store Museum is also delighted to offer group tours to educational groups of all levels, community groups, and adult social groups. We can cater to your specific needs and provide tailored programs that align with your curriculum. Located in the Brisbane CBD, we are within walking distance of popular attractions such as Parliament House, the Science Centre, Queensland Museum, South Bank Parklands, and the Botanic Gardens.
To enhance your visit, make sure to download our audio tour via the izi.TRAVEL app on your compatible iOS, Android, or Windows Phone device. This will provide you with additional insights and information during your exploration.

"A great place to understand the convict history at the start of European settlement in Brisbane. Pair this with a visit to the Brisbane Museum in the CBD to find out how they displaced and removed the Aboriginal population."
"A charming place with very interesting exhibits! I'm definitely glad I visited."
"Excellent find for those interested in the historical side of Brisbane! We found this place on a whim exploring the areas around the Old Casino building and was pleasantly surprised as it initially appeared as a small one storey building from its entrance. Little did we know we stumbled on a large, history filled nugget of a gem. Upon buying a ticket, they'll offer a free guided tour! Phil was extremely knowlegable and passionate, and we ended up strolling around for more than an hour happily chatting away! We would never have enjoyed it as much if it weren't for our great tour guide."
"The Commissariat store museum is one of the only 2 buildings left in Brisbane which were built by convicts when Brisbane (Moreton Bay) was a penal settlement. Built in 1829 it initially 2 floors and the 3rd (top floor) added later in 1923. The Royal Historical society of Queensland occupies the building now and has some great exhibitions about the convict past of the building and Brisbane city in general. Absolutely worth a visit if you are history buff or would love to learn more about early life in Brisbane city."
"Ask for the guided tour, you will not regret it. Informative glimpse to the past that will make you appreciate the world you live in today. I would HIGHLY recommend this to anyone with children for a wonderful learning day out."
