"St. Helena Island is a historically significant site that provides a unique glimpse into Australia's colonial past. The island's history as a prison settlement offers visitors a chance to learn about the harsh conditions and challenges faced by both inmates and authorities during that time. This cultural and historical significance is its primary draw. Key factors contributing to the rating: Historical Significance: The island's history as a prison colony makes it a valuable site for understanding Australia's convict past. Visitors interested in history and heritage will find it captivating and educational. Educational Value: St. Helena Island offers guided tours and interactive experiences that provide insights into the lives of prisoners and the administration of the penal colony. This makes it a valuable educational resource for both locals and tourists. Scenic Setting: The island's natural beauty and coastal location contribute to its appeal. While visiting, you can appreciate the landscape, waterfront views, and potential wildlife sightings. Accessibility: Access to the island typically requires a ferry or boat ride. This journey adds to the sense of adventure and remoteness, making the experience more memorable. Preservation Efforts: Efforts to preserve and interpret the historical features of the island demonstrate a commitment to maintaining its heritage. History enthusiasts, those interested in Australian heritage, and people seeking an educational experience will likely rate it more favorably. However, visitors looking for more recreational activities or modern amenities might find the experience less appealing."
"Great learning day for the family. Staff were amazing, in character the whole day, entertaining everyone. Just take the essentials, no time for any other activities as the tour takes up the full day."
"Great day trip for the whole family! Passionate historians who run the show!"
"What an informative day out. The tour staff were not only knowledgeable but also entertaining. The site itself, being steeped in history, was an eye opening experience into the local region. The walk itself, is definitely best done on a day perhaps not in the baking heat of Summer (unfortunate for us), as you will absolutely cop the best if Queensland sunburns. Wide brim hats are recommended along with liberal applications of sunscreen. The provided lunch, optionally purchased when booking, was enjoyable (salad with a roll and some deli meat). Tea and coffee were available. Limited water was also available at lunch, so bring a good supply for each person. At least 1L but preferably 2."
"Fantastic history about Queensland and Brisbane colonial settlement. The guys at St Helena Island Tours do an amazing job bringing the history to life. A great tourist destination and definitely worth a visit if you are in Brisbane. Great views back to the city and suburbs as well"
