About Straddie Adventures
Welcome to Straddie Adventures, an establishment located at Dunwich, Dickson Way, 1 in Australia. As a point of interest and travel agency, we offer an authentic Aboriginal cultural experience on North Stradbroke Island. Our business is owned and operated by the Original Sovereign Owners of the Quandamooka people, who have lived on this beautiful island known as "Cherrangaree".
At Straddie Adventures, we specialize in Bay Kayaking, Sand Boarding, 4WD Tours, and Kulcha with a difference. Join us on a guided kayak tour along the edge of the mangroves during high tide. As we paddle, we will share, demonstrate, and teach you about our Original Kulcha, which has been passed down through generations. Along the way, we will stop at various locations to discuss the local history, traditions, customs, and practices of the Quandamooka people.
During the kayak tour, you may have the opportunity to spot various marine life such as fish, stingrays, eagle-rays, shovel-nose rays, turtles, dugongs, whales (seasonal), dolphins, birds, and mud crabs. We even provide you with a handmade spear to try your hand at catching something to eat.
Our Sand Boarding adventure is a unique experience where you can grab a board, some wax, and slide down the sandy slopes of Straddie. Whether you choose to sit, lay, or stand on the board, you're in for a thrilling ride.
No kayaking or paddling experience is needed to participate in our tours. We believe it is our responsibility and right as the Original Sovereign Owners to teach, demonstrate, and involve people in an authentic experience of our Kulcha and Laws/Lore.
"My Kulcha" is deeply rooted in my upbringing. Since I was a little boy, my father Glen Jones and older brother Allan Jones taught me how to hunt and gather cultural resources. We learned to catch mud crabs, sand crabs, fish, and gather quanpee's and eugaries on Straddie. Our father and grandfather, Richard 'Dicky' Perry, taught us how to survive from the land and sea. We became skilled in using a spear, a net, and assisting fishermen regularly. As teenagers, Uncle Sid Coolwell, my dad's brother-in-law, and Uncle Kenny Murphy, my dad's cousin, taught us how to hunt Dugong.
Today, I continue to hunt with my brother-cousin Fred Coolwell, who is Uncle Sid's son. We pass these skills onto our children, and now my grandchildren are also involved in hunting and gathering our cultural resources. Cutting up turtle is a skill I learned from our Grand Uncle Walter Tippo, and I now pass it on to my children, grandchildren, and the boys who come hunting with us. Hunting and gathering cultural resources has been a continuous practice in my life since the late 1960s, and it remains an important part of my connection to my culture.
Join us at Straddie Adventures for an unforgettable experience where you can immerse yourself in the beauty of North Stradbroke Island, learn about the Quandamooka people, and participate in our authentic Aboriginal cultural activities. Our pristine, colorful, clear, and clean waters await your exploration. Book your adventure with us today!

Reviews of Straddie Adventures
"Our kayaking trip with Mark was relaxing, informative and exciting. We paddled at a relaxing pace around the mangroves on the western side of North Stradbroke Island, listening to Mark tell stories about indigenous culture, wildlife and the natural environment. The water is calm, clear and shallow and you can see stingrays and fish. A pod of 5 dolphins came very close to us at the start of the trip, while they were hunting a school of fish. Later Mark spotted a flathead lying on the bottom and speared it from his kayak. You should have seen the smile on his face. I highly recommend this 2 hour kayaking trip because it is enjoyable, adventurous and not too strenuous."
"Kayaking with Mark was a clear highlight of our long weekend on Straddie. We paddled on a calm morning around the island to the sounds of the local birds and accompanied by storytelling of the island’s history and current issues. Many thanks."
"Rich cultural experience and a true adventure. We went out on a kayak with Mark who helped us truly understand the place we were visiting. We saw so much stunning wildlife including a dugong with her baby, which I will never forget. Suitable for kids with a variety of experiences to suit all abilities and appetites for excitement. This is probably the best tourism experience I have ever had so I think it's a must-do for anyone visiting Terangeri/Minjerribah/North Stradbroke. Excellent value."
"I will recommend Straddle Adventures to anyone visiting the island. Mark was a great guide (kayak and food tasting). He is very well spoken and has great knowledge of his cultural heritage and the region."
"Mark is the best. He did us not only how to kayak but also told us the aboriginal stories. So glad to have him in the tour."
