About The Austen Tea Room
Welcome to The Austen Tea Room, located at 40 Nicholson Street in Essendon, Australia. As a cafe, restaurant, and store, we strive to provide a unique and memorable experience for all our visitors.
Our tearoom was designed with deep respect and dedication to the incredible author, Jane Austen, whose works continue to touch the hearts of many, even after 200 years. We wanted to create a space where people can escape from their busy lives and step back into a simpler time, where time was enjoyed rather than rushed through.
While we don't claim to be a shrine to Jane Austen, we aim to bring a sense of calmness and beauty that is often forgotten in today's bustling cafes. Drawing inspiration from the quaint tearooms and picturesque landscapes of England, we have combined the two to create a modest reflection of a timeless and beautiful era.
Jane Austen, born on December 16, 1775, was an English romantic novelist and the fifth child of eight siblings. Like her sister, she never married. At the age of twenty, she fell in love with Tom Lefroy, but their relationship was cut short by the intervention of the Lefroy family. Austen later received her only proposal of marriage from Harris Bigg-Wither, which she initially accepted but soon realized was a mistake and withdrew her acceptance.
During her lifetime, Austen's novels did not gain much popularity, and she made little income from them. However, her books gained immense respect and fortune in the 1900s and continue to be cherished to this day.
At The Austen Tea Room, we offer daily tea sessions from weekdays 12pm to 2pm and weekends 11am to 1pm or 12pm to 2pm. Bookings are essential to secure your spot. Additionally, we serve an all-day breakfast menu and a wide selection of lunch meals. Our customers' favorites include the pancake with mixed berries and ice cream and our delicious club sandwiches.
We invite you to visit The Austen Tea Room and experience the charm and tranquility that Jane Austen's legacy brings. Join us in celebrating her timeless works and indulge in a delightful culinary experience.

Reviews of The Austen Tea Room
"Fabulous cakes and coffee helpful staff"
"We booked in for high tea, the website said it was $55 per person but upon booking was told it was $75 per person. We've been very understanding and considerate with hospitality pricing since covid and it was Mothers Day weekend. We accepted the cost, as we were hoping the food and experience would be worth it. We have had a fair share of high teas before and know you're paying for the experience, atmosphere as well as the food. As soon as we walked in, I wanted to walk out. The general Cafe area is dated and unappealing. High tea was served in smaller rooms at the book which were a little nicer. Staff were very attentive but the food was appalling. The mini quiches, pies and sausage rolls were laughable, not quaint at all. I have had better out of a Coles freezer. The sweets were average. The best thing was the scones which were very tasty. The cream served wasn't clotted, I expected more authenticity for a place based on an English author. For $75 per person, this was daylight robbery. I could have picked this whole meal at the servo and put it on tiered stands at home for under $10. I'm extremely disappointed to say the least."
"Thanks for a lovely afternoon in your tearooms. So nice to be served on lovely china in a lovely house. Staff were very friendly and we will see you again."
"I’m rating this place taking as parameters: coffee quality, staff members and ambiance. I love this semi hidden pearl in Essendon which I discovered by chance one day when luckily, I took the wrong road. Since then, I love stopping by for a coffee every time I’m in the surroundings. The coffee is delicious, creamy, nutty, tasty, perfect froth. Kiuli is a brilliant barista and always attending customers with a smile and the friendliest attitude. The place has many separate rooms where is feasible to have a private gathering or celebration. The decorations are adorable, romantic, refined, I can see the inspiration on Jane Austen in every detail selected to ornament each room. The Austen is frequently busy, visited by locals who stop by to enjoy a cuppa, a treat and a talk with a friend. I’ve taken many pictures for all of you to depict the lovely vibes of this shop. Ceci"
"Pros - Beautiful rooms, lovely table setup including stunning pink roses - Food was presented well - Finger sandwiches were nice enough - Gluten free option was good (I didn’t get gluten poisoning so that’s always a bonus for us coeliacs!) Cons - Service was extremely slow Our sandwiches and hot food trays were delivered within 15 minutes of arrival BUT We were not asked for tea (or coffee) orders, as we assumed at least a pot of each would be brought to us...but no. Eventually after 45 minutes we asked for some! Only a pot of tea was brought to our table, no coffee. We were then told that had to be ordered by the cup. - Staff and owner not that friendly Perhaps they were all having a bad day, but there definitely wasn’t service with a smile the day we went! - Hot food was not hot, more like lukewarm on delivery to the table - Had to ask for tomato sauce (who serves pies without that?) They would be more efficient if they planned and prepared better, rather than constantly running backwards and forwards, especially when there are so many little separate rooms. Final verdict Unfortunately I have to say I wouldn’t return here or recommend it to others."
